a few resources on racism and white supremacy in classic studies i recommend, especially to white classics fans and students :-)

classical studies need structural change

he wants to save classics from whiteness. can the field survive?

white supremacy and the past and future of classics

above the veil: the point magazine

less of a resource but interesting; this article about cambridge students and staff trashing this article that downplays the racism in classic studies and the experiences of students of color written by a cambridge classics professor.

i think we could all benefit from reading these and learning more about white supremacy in classics!

Was curious how far Ithaca was from troy today while listening to epic the musical and rereading the illiad and I found this map

I think odysseus would have been better just to walk😭

psychicbluebirdmiracle

So uh I finally decided to see how long it would take to walk

BRO WHY DID YOU NOT JUST WALK

mod felix reblog the important caveat is that none of these locations are definitive or agreed upon and really he arguably enters a weird fantasyland situation the second he parts ways from the other greek ships

Anonymous asked:

Follow better blogs, skill issue. plenty of people talk about the Trojan your experiences aren't universal lmao

that post was not about tumblr users.

but if you want to be constructive here you are always welcome to recommend names of blogs and/or scholars who you think have spoken about this in useful ways.

mod felix most of my interaction with the field is offline at this point. as a full-time grad student i just also happen to say things on tumblr on occasion

why is it that every time the subject of ptsd in ancient greece or rome comes up someone ALWAYS starts talking about how much they love achilles in vietnam. like i know why but also why is the default paradigm for trauma the invading soldier in a field where we are constantly talking about invasion and rape. why do we talk about achilles in vietnam but not briseis in vietnam. or hecuba and polyxena in vietnam. or aeneas in vietnam. why do we talk about how hard it was for achilles to kill all those people but not about how hard it was for the trojans to lose their entire city and countless people they love. can anyone hear me it's so dark in here.

#talk about any and all of the women #talk about how traumatizing it must have been for them to see Hector brutalized #to know that the same fate could await them #to watch Achilles burn polyxenia (I’m pretty sure that’s her name) #like explore Achilles trauma whatever but please also explore the much more interesting and also more valid traumas #women suffered terribly in ancient wars

hey like it’s true that women suffered (and still suffer!) terribly but i want to be extremely clear that this post is specifically about people regardless of gender whose homes are invaded/burned/pillaged and who are killed/raped/taken as slaves. like in the trojan war all the greek men have wives who are safe at home but the trojan men have wives who are in troy and who are going to die just the same as they are. and in particular if you’re going to compare the trojan war to the vietnam war as a means to talk about ptsd you absolutely have to be talking about the people who lost their homes and the people who were permanently injured and the people who were raped in horrific ways and the people who got on boats and left to find a new home that hadn’t been burned to the ground.

like, both american and greek soldiers had wives who were safe at home the whole time. odysseus takes ten years to get home but once he gets there his wife and son are like. alive and healthy and waiting for him. and at the same time (in some stories) he literally threw hector’s infant son off the walls of troy. hector’s wife and mother were enslaved. it’s not that specifically women suffered terribly, it’s that trojan women suffered terribly while greek women stayed home.

mod felix i'm not directing this like. solely/specifically at you to be clear i'm responding because i think it's important to be clear about the specific dynamic i'm talking about there's a lot to be said about women's trauma in ancient greece and rome too but this post is not about that if you want an article about specifically women's trauma i remember jessica wise's chapter subaltern women sexual violence and trauma in ovid's amores in the book emotional trauma in greece and rome being decent cannot speak to the rest of the book i have not read it. this was assigned to me for class a while ago uhhh and dm regenderate or ask off anon if you want a pdf i guess. i can upload it to proton drive or something

1. like yeah literally you can tell when someone is like. not thinking about the people who actually lost their homes and also 2. i don't know if this is like. weird to ask on the post but do you remember the name of the lecturer? i would be interested in looking up their work and/or maybe suggesting them to speak at my school at some point

pinkcupboardwitch

I ONE HUNDRED percent would love to recommend her, she does fantastic work and I think more people would benefit from knowing her! It was Kelly Nguyen at UCLA. I think this description of a course she designed is particularly topical to the content of the original post:

“I teach an annual course in relation to this project on comparative refugee narratives, with a focus on Greco-Roman antiquity and contemporary Vietnamese history.”

classicslesbianopinions

thank you!! that sounds like such a good course… always very happy to hear about people doing this sort of thing!

mod felix i know they're like. always looking for people to come give talks at my school and also once a year all the grad students have to like. suggest people. and i never know anybody. so honestly in general if anyone has favorite academics i would love to hear <3 also if you remember and are willing to share but would rather share privately you can dm regenderate or ask off anon!!

mod felix i haven't read achilles in vietnam but at some point i need to just so i can be informed when the subject comes up but just like. people talk like it's so Deep to talk about achilles as an american soldier and literally there are so many other things that we could be talking about instead
