While creating criminal or administrative offences is a crucial initial step towards enforcing environmental protection, their effectiveness depends on several factors, including the criminal justice system's capacity to enforce them. Despite progress in environmental protection laws, there are still several priorities to address to strengthen national legislative frameworks for environmental protection. 👀 reading tips 📚 #Environmental Rule of #Law: Tracking Progress and Charting. Future Directions UN Environment Programme ⚖ Since the 2019 publication of the First Global Report on Environmental Rule of Law, there have been both advancements and challenges in this field. #Climate #change and #social #inequities have heavily influenced political and social discourse, impacting environmental law. Despite widespread implementation of #environmental #laws, their effectiveness remains insufficient to tackle the crises of climate change, #biodiversity #loss, and #pollution. Current climate pledges and laws fall short of the Paris Agreement goals, biodiversity loss is accelerating, and pollution remains widespread, with most people living in areas with poor air quality. 💡 This report, building on the First Global Report, aims to strengthen environmental rule of law by addressing challenges and sharing good practices. It provides a comprehensive assessment of global trends, gaps, and opportunities in environmental rule of law, based on data related to laws, institutions, civic engagement, rights, and justice. 🚨 The report recommends #standardizing environmental rule of law #indicators, developing emergency guidelines, integrating social justice into environmental institutions, and establishing a technology-policy interface. ↘
