Women's Month is coming to an end but let's continue to shine the light on the architects – of all genders – who prioritise attention to detail and texture in their designs. There is no denying that rich textures and intricate details can elevate a space. Take the delicate latticework of Jean Nouvel's Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, for example. Or the stonework, stained glass, and ornate decorations of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, by Antoni Gaudí. Texture and detail create interest, warmth and richness in architecture. It can also inspire awe and wonder, encouraging people to slow down and appreciate the craftsmanship and artistry involved. That is the key isn't it: SLOWING DOWN! There are so many things rushing us on in life – but at what cost? Is there still such a thing as feminine architecture? Well, yes – and no. Yes, because there are still some principles in architecture that are historically associated with being more feminine. But by no means should architecture ever be placed in any box, right? Nonetheless, in honour of Women's Month, we would like to highlight some of these principles and look at the challenges they can solve in modern architecture. Like curved, organic forms and natural light for example. Curved lines create a sense of flow and harmony. They can help to create more efficient, flexible spaces that can adapt to various functions, improve airflow, and promote psychological well-being. Natural light, on the other hand, reduces energy consumption and regulates our circadian rhythms helping to build spaces that are inviting and productive. Perhaps in future these characteristics won't be known as "feminine" but as normal practice because of the good it can do for humankind. What do you think? Join the VELD Lifestyle. It involves designing spaces that resonate with a client's inner self and enhance their everyday happiness. A home can and should be your place of safety and refuge but it does not need to stop there. Imagine if your home could underpin and encourage everything that is important to you like family time, nature, hobbies, etc.? The home is the one place where every person should be able to kick back, relax, and just be themselves. A place to be safe and feel safe, away from the stressors of everyday life. And a place where fond memories are made. At least in an ideal world, this would be the case...
