All of us have a responsibility towards the planet. And at Veld Architects, we take that responsibility very seriously. That's why a resilient and climate-responsive approach is not just about designing architecture that can weather the storm. It is about helping to change the forecast altogether! Here are some simple and practical examples how we include sustainable solutions in highly functional ways: 1. We orientate buildings to be able to maximise warmth during winter, and stay cool during summer 2. We include rainwater harvesting solutions 3. We prioritise the use of water-wise, local plants and trees 4. We introduce green roofs for insulation, and stormwater management 5. We include overhangs and light shelves for shading and to boost natural light indoors 6. We make the most of natural ventilation for better air quality and lower energy bills 7. We harness solar, thermal mass, and smart shading for ultimate efficiency Read more here: https://lnkd.in/dDutEmpx Join the VELD Lifestyle. Nobody tells nature what to do. If she wants to give us snow in September she will. In South Africa, our weather is as diverse as our people. No two provinces are the same. From chilly rainy days with gusts of wind to dry sunny days for weeks on end, you can expect something of everything at different intervals of the year. Smart architectural design doesn't fight nature but adapts to it! Solutions for this include: 1. Retractable roofs 2. Opening skylights 3. Adjustable louvers for year-round comfort 4. Smart landscaping with plants that thrive and shade in all seasons 5. Smart glass 6. Movable walls 7. Multi-functional verandas 8. Green roofs 9. Wind-responsive exteriors Read more: https://lnkd.in/d8R4nXf3 Join the VELD Lifestyle. Make your next design a VELD design.

During spring, new, fresh, and innovative ideas are blooming everywhere. That's why it is the perfect time for prospective home builders and architects to talk about design strategies that can help combat climate change. The time to act is now because the construction and related industries contribute to a large portion of the greenhouse gasses in the air. Enter Resilient and climate-responsive design! One of the facets of this approach is building for the future by designing spaces that can stand the test of time. Examples of this include: - Rammed earth and adobe bricks because they are naturally resistant to temperature swings and are sourced locally. - Special paints and coatings to help shield against rain and harsh UV rays. - Curved concrete roof designs :building_construction: to tackle Joburg and Pretoria's infamous hailstorms. At Veld Architects, we're passionate about designing homes that work with nature, not against it. One key element of this is passive design, which allows for natural climate control, reducing the reliance on mechanical systems like HVAC. By incorporating features such as strategically placed overhangs, we can: ✔️ Reduce solar heat gain during hot summer months ☀️ ✔️ Allow for more sunlight and warmth during colder winter months ❄️ ✔️ Improve overall energy efficiency, lowering utility costs and reducing environmental impact 🌍 This kind of intelligent design not only makes homes more comfortable to live in but also more sustainable in the long run. Pairing passive systems with efficient HVAC solutions means we’re creating spaces that balance modern comfort with eco-conscious living. Design for the future, today. Let's build more sustainable homes together! 🏡✨ #SustainableArchitecture #PassiveDesign #EnergyEfficiency #GreenBuilding #HVAC #Architecture #DesignForTheFutur

In South Africa, spring has sprung and around us, it is all about change, new beginnings, colour and greenery. It is therefore an excellent season to focus on climate change and what we as local architects can do to help address the issue. It is no secret that the building and construction industry is a major contributor to the greenhouse gasses in the air. However, over the past few years, new ideas and developments within the industry are bringing about positive change. A great strategy to highlight in this regard is resilient and climate-responsive design. At its core, this approach is about adopting energy-efficient and sustainable building practices and materials that have been specifically tailored to the local climate. No two geographical locations – not even direct neighbours – will have exactly the same exposure to the sun, wind, and rain from every angle. However, by really examining a site and carefully considering the climate, topography, vegetation, and orientation, architects can implement Passive Design that works with and adapts to the elements. The goal of resilient and climate-responsive design is to create comfortable and highly functional spaces that can sustainably withstand the test of time. It can be achieved by integrating strategies that tick the boxes for durability, flexibility, and sustainability.
