Together with a brilliant team of co-organizers—including Dominik Stammbach and Peter Henderson from Princeton University, Christopher Manning and Gaku Morio from Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL), Alba (Ruiran) Su and Alok Singh from University of Oxford, Kalyan Dutia from Climate Policy Radar, together with our team from the University of Zurich and ETH Zürich: Saeid A. Vaghefi, Tobias Schimanski, Veruska Muccione, and Jingwei Ni. We are excited to explore innovative ways #AI can address climate challenges, from data analysis to actionable insights. A chance encounter with an economics book changed Prof. Felix Kubler's career path. Originally a mathematics student, he switched to economics and earned a PhD in the field. His interest later shifted to financial economics when he joined Prof. Thorsten Hens at our Faculty. Today, Kübler’s research focuses on macrofinance, a discipline that bridges economics and finance. He sees this intersection as a powerful tool to address issues such as climate change. One notable avenue in climate policy research is the implementation of a global emissions tax. Kübler explored whether compensating older generations financially could increase support for such a tax. He notes: “Taxes are often viewed negatively and the introduction of new ones is extremely unpopular, especially among older generations. 🌍 Improving Climate-Economic Models for Better Policy Decisions Climate change is one of the most pressing global challenges, and effective policy relies on accurate predictions. A new study led by Prof. Felix Kubler from the Universität Zürich | University of Zurich and collaborators from ETH Zürich, University of Lausanne, and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München has significantly improved the calibration of climate-economic models. Their research focuses on refining climate emulators — models that simulate the relationship between CO2 emissions and global warming. By improving the calibration of these models, they ensure more accurate projections, which are critical for shaping policies around carbon taxation and climate change mitigation. With better alignment to cutting-edge climate science, this improved approach will empower policymakers with more reliable data for tackling climate change. Join us for the Finance Seminar featuring Lu Liu from The Wharton School to learn how different mortgage structures influence monetary policy transmission and financial stability. Her research shows that financial stability risks are "U-shaped" in mortgage structure. Adjustable-rate mortgages (ARMs) are more sensitive to interest rates changes, causing defaults when banks are financially robust, which lowers risk premia during crises compared to fixed-rate mortgages (FRMs). As a result, mortgage structure with moderate fixed interest rate period reduces fluctuations in the financial health of banks. ESG has the potential to benefit both the planet and returns! 💡 An insightful study by Falko Paetzold, Co-head of Initiative in Sustainable Finance, Dr. Noah Bani-Harouni, and Ulrich HOMMEL (霍文麒) reveals what many of us suspected: strategic ESG implementation is a powerful driver of financial performance.  👉🏼 Key success factors that emerged:  1. Early integration during due diligence (especially crucial for €1B+ funds)  2. Robust value creation plans (with interesting size-dependent outcomes)  3. Active impact monitoring with specific targets  4. Right-sized reporting frequency (quarterly for large funds, annual for smaller ones) Perhaps most intriguing is the study's revelation that fund size significantly influences optimal ESG strategy implementation. Smaller funds need different approaches than their larger counterparts — a crucial insight for Private Equity professionals. The message is clear: ESG isn't just about risk management anymore.
