At the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), we're dedicated to helping countries and communities lower risk and raise resilience in the face of natural and human-induced hazards. Our work is guided by the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, a 15-year agreement adopted by the international community in 2015, which was the first building block of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Record-breaking turnout at the 2024 High School Students Summit for World Tsunami Awareness Day! 🏆
🇯🇵 Held in Japan's Kumamoto Prefecture, this year’s summit welcomed 526 students from 119 schools and 🌍 41 countries. During the two-day programme, students presented research, tackled disaster risks, and shared ideas on building safer, more resilient communities.
As we approach the 20th anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, the 2024 World Tsunami Awareness Day focus is on empowering young people through risk education, preparedness and safer schools.

📚🌍 Resilience begins in the classroom. In Barcarena, Brazil, students are learning about disaster risks – to keep themselves safe and also to empower their entire community.
Children can bring valuable knowledge to transform society. Through evacuation drills and hands-on lessons, young leaders are stepping up—teaching, guiding, and inspiring their peers and families. 📢
By teaching children about disaster risk and preparedness, Barcarena is empowering the next generation for a resilient future 🌐

🌧️ The Valencia region was worst affected, with many places receiving more than 300 l/m². On 29/30 October, a weather station in Chiva received 491 l/m² in just eight hours - the equivalent of a year's worth of rainfall, according to AEMET - Agencia Estatal de Meteorología.
❓Why is this happening?
🌬️The phenomenon is quite well-known during autumn because lingering warm surface air from summer meets a sudden cold invasion aloft from the polar regions, leading to low-pressure values that persist over a few days and rotate over the concerned region.
🌊 The presence of warm air near the surface, fuelled by excessive moisture from the still-warm Mediterranean Sea, and the instability generated by the conflict with cold air in the upper atmosphere lead to large convective clouds with heavy downpours and sudden flash floods.
🌡️ Climate change is expected to make these systems more intense because of warmer sea waters and increasing moisture in the atmosphere.

Disaster risk reduction is everyone’s business and can only succeed when it becomes an all-of-government affair, says UNDRR head Kamal Kishore, commenting from the G20 Brasil 2024 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Technical and Ministerial Meeting.
Disaster risk reduction is essential – not only for saving lives, but also for sustaining economic growth. This is the powerful message to the world from the G20 Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group Technical and Ministerial Meeting.
I warmly welcome this first Ministerial Declaration of this group, and thank all the members of the working group for elevating the topic of Disaster Risk Reduction within the G20.
I would also like to commend Brazil on leading an inclusive process in the development of the Ministerial Declaration – one that puts the needs of the most disadvantaged and at-risk first, which is key to ensuring that no one is left behind.
It is now up to us to ensure that the calls to action of this Declaration resonate far and wide. Not only among our home agencies and ministries but also across our various interagency mechanisms, because disaster risk reduction is everyone’s business and can only succeed when it becomes an all-of-government affair.
