“From this moment to the next 60 years, there will be a lot of opportunities for people that are in trade and development to be able to join forces to ensure that the planet Earth makes it. A sustainable, inclusive future means a world with equity, greater care for the planet, and where government institutions are not just working, but also giving us the opportunity to protect the environment. If we don't start now, there will be no future for any of us,” says Chidinma Cynthia Udeogu, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Youth Network member in Nigeria, for the #UNCTAD60 celebrations. Stark disparities persist on path to #GlobalGoals. UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD)’s SDG Pulse 2024 provides a global reference for tracking developments related to the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The annual statistical publication, now in its sixth edition, paints a mixed picture of how the world is faring on the global goals, highlighting the stark disparities that remain despite significant advancements. “This report serves as a call to action, urging policymakers, businesses, and civil society to leverage its insights to drive meaningful change,” says UN Trade and Development Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan, “The time for data-informed action is now.” Here’s what the data tell us: https://ow.ly/IKcI50SElE2 #OurCommonFuture

Rising debt costs are draining vital public resources needed for development. 3.3 billion people — almost half of humanity — now live in countries that spend more on debt interest than on education or health. The United Nations debt dashboard offers data and insights on key public debt and development spending indicators for 188 countries. It allows for insightful comparisons across countries, regions, and special groups, categorized by development status. With interactive features and visualizations, you can explore trends, gain country-level insights on public debt, and understand the complex relationship between debt and development spending in a user-friendly way. “People are suffering, but markets are not.” With 3.3 billion people living in countries that spend more on debt repayments than on health or education, UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Rebeca Grynspan is calling for sweeping reforms to the multilateral financial system. In an interview with the UN Library in Geneva ahead of the Summit of the Future, she highlights the strain on developing nations forced to choose between servicing their debt and serving their people. “An inclusive and sustainable future is one of the paths we can take, and it’s achievable. We have the knowledge, and we have the technologies. We just need to stick to it and, as young people, make our commitment clear and our paths known to the leaders. We need to make them understand that this is the future we want,” says Nadia Paleari, a UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Youth Action Hub member in Italy, for the #UNCTAD60 celebrations. ▶️ https://ow.ly/CXFX50TawUq

Despite the promising growth, the marine fisheries and aquaculture sector faces several challenges. Trade barriers, particularly non-tariff measures (NTMs), hinder the growth. NTMs are rules and regulations, other than tariffs, that countries use to control the amount and types of products entering their markets. They include requirements for food safety and quality standards, which can be costly for exporters. For instance, sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS) and technical barriers to trade (TBT) significantly increase compliance costs and restrict market access.
