Mongabay Founder and CEO, Rhett Butler, previews the year ahead for action on deforestation and the future of rainforests across the world. Two key moments include: 🌳 The EUDR will come into effect at the end of 2025 - after a postponement was agreed in December to provide producers and importers additional time to adapt to the regulation’s requirements. While the delay alters the immediate timeline, the EUDR remains poised to reshape global supply chains and trade practices. 🌳 COP30 will be a key moment for tropical forests in 2025 - as the largest climate summit heads to the Brazilian Amazon. Discussions around deforestation will likely take center stage. https://lnkd.in/eS4awR5h #TropicalForests #Deforestation #EUDR #COP30 #SupplyChains

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), which takes effect at the end of 2025, will require companies to trace commodity origins along the entire supply chain to ensure they’re deforestation-free. Technological solutions, such as satellite data and precise digital mapping, are becoming increasingly vital tools for companies to assess deforestation risks and ensure compliance across complex supply chains. Despite a range of tech solutions becoming more readily available, experts suggest that much of the success of the EUDR will be down to the partnerships between suppliers and buyers, coupled with the extent of government action. https://lnkd.in/gBHSWDSw #EUDR #Deforestation #Traceability #Commodities #SupplyChains

As host of 2025’s COP30 climate summit, Brazil is working on two complementary finance initiatives to support tropical forest conservation. 1 - Tropical Forest Finance Facility (TFFF) Involves investments from sovereign wealth funds, philanthropic foundations, and international investors. The profits generated from these investments will be allocated to countries that maintain deforestation rates below 0.5% of their total forest area, providing financial rewards for effective forest preservation. 2 - Tropical Forest Mechanism (TFM) Proposes that highly polluting industries contribute a minimum fraction of their annual earnings to forest conservation efforts. Similar to the TFFF, the TFM aims to incentivise countries to keep deforestation rates under 0.5%, thereby promoting sustainable forest management practices. Both initiatives have been first proposed by Brazil and now need further support from governments across the world to help them become a reality. A new report by the Intergovernmental Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) states that climate change, nature loss, food insecurity, water, and health are all inextricably linked - and dealing with them as separate issues won't work. The report says this “siloed” approach has unintended consequences, such as damaging biodiversity through tree-planting schemes, or polluting rivers while ramping up food production. "Future scenarios with wide ranging benefits across various issues come from actions that focus on sustainable production and consumption, in combination with conserving and restoring ecosystems, reducing pollution, and mitigating and adapting to climate change" - said Paula Harrison, Report Co-Chair and Professor at the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. The report identifies more than 70 solutions to tackle these problems holistically, many of which are low cost. And says that delaying the action needed to meet climate and nature policy goals will increase the costs of delivering them. For example, delayed action on biodiversity goals could as much as double the eventual costs. https://lnkd.in/eMp4Jprc #Biodiversity #TropicalForests #Commodities #SupplyChains #ClimateChange #FoodSecurity

Brazil, the world's largest beef exporter, is in a unique position to address the sector's heavy environmental toll. But deforestation-free beef is possible in the Amazon, and has the potential to transform the global beef supply chain. Jack Hurd (TFA) and Jennifer Morris (The Nature Conservancy), share 3 main ways in which companies can facilitate the flow of sustainable beef from the Amazon to global markets, in this World Economic Forum Agenda Blog.
