An innovation space for building the field of systemic investing. Initiated and supported by EIT Climate-KIC.

Info

The TransCap Initiative is a collaborative innovation space for developing, demonstrating, and scaling systemic investing in the places that matter most for human prosperity—such as cities, landscapes, and coastal zones—as well as in value chains and other real-economy systems. We apply systems thinking, human-centred design, and the principles of mission-driven innovation to explore how financial capital can catalyse the transformation of systems in service of a low-carbon, climate-resilient, just, and inclusive future. Our mission involves developing a knowledge and innovation base, testing novel concepts and approaches, and building a community of practice. In doing so, we recognise the complex adaptive nature of human and natural systems and the fundamental uncertainty that governs their evolution, and we thus emphasise the need for collaboration, experimentation, and learning. The places and value chains we intend to transform act as centres of gravity for our work. In each of these systems, we will work with challenge owners, communities, innovators, investors, and other stakeholders to design, structure, and finance strategic investment portfolios nested within a broader systems intervention approach. The TransCap Initiative has been initiated and is currently supported by EIT Climate-KIC.

Visualizing systemic investing. Over the summer we released our "hallmarks" of #SystemicInvesting. This key document—the result of extensive conceptual work in the TCI team and with our community—defines and describes what we mean by systemic investing and what it looks like in practice. Whilst an investment activity need not necessarily exhibit all of the 16 hallmarks to transform a system, it is the collectivity of the hallmarks that establish the coherence necessary to bring systemic investing to life. In our diagram below we have visualized how the hallmarks form a systemic investment program. We use the word “program” because systemic investing will typically be operationalized as a sustained effort involving multiple vehicles, capital types, and investors. The diagram will first be shown with all components in view before being deconstructed and rebuilt frame by frame with explanations and references to the hallmarks. Systemic investing is a nascent field. The hallmarks are a snapshot of our thinking and we want to develop and evolve this document over time in collaboration with our community. The public consultation for this version of the hallmarks closes in a couple of weeks. Where—and how—should we deploy capital to support the transition to regenerative agriculture in the American Midwest? Agriculture's extensive environmental footprint and pivotal role in global food and economic security make it a quintessential systemic challenge—to which #RegenerativeAgriculture has emerged as a promising solution. But shifting from conventional to regenerative practices necessitates substantial investments. And it is not simply a question of 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 capital is deployed, but 𝐡𝐨𝐰 it is deployed. The American Midwest is one of the world's most intense agricultural production areas, and capital is already flowing into regenerative agriculture here, including from federal government programs, foundations, and venture capitalists. And there is growing interest from U.S. funders and investors. However, this money largely flows into single-point solutions: funding for one processing facility, investment in individual start-ups, grants for conservation projects and so on. We need a systemic approach to investing—the strategic orchestration of multiple forms of capital provided by multiple types of investors. So today we’re pleased to share a new “transition map” to help guide those investors and funders wanting to be part of the shift to regenerative agriculture. The result of a year-long systemic inquiry and consultation process, the map identifies a number of strategic impact opportunities which, when pursued in concert with other initiatives, could unblock systemic challenges and help transform the agri-food sector in this critical region. Explore our presentation on the research ➡️ https://2ly.link/201Bz (Find the full map in the comments). The work doesn’t end here. With the support of the Walton Family Foundation we’re kicking off stage two of the prototype: the development of a “strategic capital facilitator” to mobilize and coordinate capital flows in service of the broader mission. Watch this space for updates. This map was developed thanks to funding from the New Capitalism Project Lab and with support from the Meridian Institute. +++++++++ 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘛𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘊𝘢𝘱 𝘐𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘯𝘰𝘯-𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘧𝘪𝘵 𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘯𝘰𝘷𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱, 𝘵𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘦 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘪𝘯𝘷𝘦𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨. 2023 was the year #SystemicInvesting stepped into the spotlight as we saw a surge in interest in both the core ideas and the practice of this new investment logic. And we’re delighted to share our Annual Report that tells the story of our activities and achievements across 2023 and early 2024. Highlights: 💡We established a research function, activated a research agenda, and gave shape and depth to many of the key concepts at the heart of systemic investing 🚜We took our thinking off the page and into the real world, running prototypes across regenerative agriculture, cities, mobility, and conservation finance 🙌🏽 We connected with over 1,000 systemic investing pioneers across five gatherings, including the inaugural Systemic Investing Summit (watch this space for Summit 2.0!) Have a look ➡️https://lnkd.in/gRVMW69Y 2024 has already been a hugely productive and exciting year and with our community we continue to push theoretical and practical boundaries and scale out the work to reach new audiences and contexts. To find out more about what we’re currently working on, you can read a summary of our priorities for the next 18 months on page 12.  We thank the many champions of systemic investing for their confidence in the work and the courage it takes to be out front with us and other pioneers, and we are grateful to our partners, advisors, and funders for their support and trust in us.

🐐 Introducing the pioneers of systemic investing 🐐 The core TCI team is small, but we are made mighty by our global community. From conceptual development to on-the-ground prototyping, our collaborations with these brilliant humans are critical to building the field of #SystemicInvesting. Over the next few months we’ll be sharing how those featured came into this work, their particular areas of focus, and a little bit of their lives behind the scenes. For our first post we’re delighted to open a window into Alex Hannant's world. Alex is a TCI Fellow, meaning we work especially close with him on a number of projects and inquiries. In our monthly newsletter we’ll be sharing where Alex and our other community members are looking to collaborate with others. For systems change to become a possibility, capital flows need to be orchestrated with systemic intelligence and a collaborative, non-profit logic. Currently, this role that we call "strategic capital facilitation" (SCF) is a critical gap in the sustainable finance space. It’s an area of inquiry that we are exploring here at TCI together with our community and on the ground through our prototyping work (see the link in the comments to find out more about SCFs). So we’re delighted to announce that we are kicking off a new collaboration with the Walton Family Foundation to design an SCF for the next phase of our #RegenerativeAgriculture prototype. This design work has the potential to close a critical gap, helping us catalyze the shift to regenerative agriculture in the American midwest at pace and scale. We have also developed a strategic blueprint for funders and investors who want to support the transition to regenerative agriculture. We will be publishing this interactive transition map in the next few weeks—watch this space! 🗺️ Have you seen our systems map for transformative investing? The map explores the current reality of the investment system. We aim to illustrate the key dynamics driving the behaviour of the system and which keep the system producing undesired outcomes for society and the environment. Understanding these dynamics can support work towards systemic transformation. Diana Velasco and Edward Steinmueller, in collaboration with Tatiana Fernandez from the Generalitat de Catalunya, a partner of Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC), developed the systems map. The collaborative effort was facilitated alongside ReImagined Futures. This stands as yet another successful collaboration between TIPC and the DT Lab, underscoring our shared commitment to advancing transformative initiatives. Take time to explore the map 👉 👉 https://lnkd.in/dHqC3cKg #systemschange #transformativeinvestment Roberta Benedetti del Rio, TransCap Initiative, TWIST: Investing for Systems Change, Johan Schot, Katapult Foundation, Toniic, Alison Fort, Anna Hutchinson, Transformative Innovation Policy Consortium (TIPC), Viliana Dzhartova

Did you know about the 'streetlight effect'?

Profil von Dominic Hofstetter anzeigen, Grafik

Executive Director at the TransCap Initiative, Board Member at Expedition Zukunft

I've known about the streetlight effect since taking a class on behavioral economics at business school, but it wasn't until recently that I realized just how prevalent it is in the world of sustainable finance. Examples: 1) An employee of a well-known European development finance institution said to me that their people were "so busy getting money out the door that they don't have time to engage with new ways of working." 2) Someone at a well-known European foundation told me that their MO was to "just get on with it" and that our acknowledgment of the inherent complexity of systems made us use language that they found hard to connect with. 3) A wealth owner told me about an investment fund they launched some time ago and how they only now realize that there isn't enough deal flow to sustain an adequate pipeline. All of these anecdotes are examples of people "looking where the light is," which may not be where the actual solution to the problem might lie. This is the fundamental issue we're addressing in the TransCap Initiative's work on system financing needs. At the heart of this work lies a simple objective: to increase the coherence between an investor's impact goals and the strategies used to achieve them.
