🌊 Are we giving back as much as we take from our oceans? ‘From nature, good things come, and to nature, bad things go.’ Our relationship with the ocean begins with resource extraction and ends with waste disposal, but it's time to rethink this cycle. Ussif Rashid Sumaila, professor of ocean and fisheries economics at The University of British Columbia and co-recipient of the 2023 The Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement, advocates for an interdisciplinary approach—bringing together academics, governments, and NGOs to co-create solutions for the critical challenges facing our oceans. 🌍 The ocean is vital to our survival, so we need to work across disciplines to safely extract resources and reduce pollution for a sustainable future. 🌊🌿 #OceanConservation #Sustainability #InterdisciplinaryApproach

🌾 Reconnecting People with Their Food: The Missing Link in Our Food Systems 🌍 In the final episode of our In Conversation series, Johan Rockström and Christina Hicks dive deep into a fundamental question: What are the biggest issues in the relationship between people and food? They highlight one of the most critical challenges we face today: 🔍 Lack of Connection: Most people are disconnected from the origins of their food, unaware of the labor, energy, and ecological impact that goes into every bite. Understanding how food is tied to land, communities, and sustainability is key to creating meaningful change. Building a more resilient food system means recognizing the value of what’s on our plates and how it influences both our environment and society. 👉 What do you believe are the biggest issues in the relationship between people and food? #FoodSystems #Sustainability #PlanetaryBoundaries #FoodAwareness #ClimateAction

🌱 What changes should happen in the food system over the next five years? 🌍 In the latest episode of our In Conversation series, Christina Hicks from Lancaster University joins Johan Rockström from the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research to discuss the changes they believe are crucial to building a sustainable future for our food systems. As we face the challenge of staying within planetary boundaries, they explore key areas for improvement, including: 🔄 Reforming Subsidies: Shifting subsidies to support sustainable farming practices that prioritize environmental health and resilience. 🤝 Promoting Equity: Ensuring that those who are least responsible for the climate crisis gain better access to diverse and nutritious diets. Our food system is essential to human health, security, and the environment. Let’s consider the changes needed to create a fairer and more sustainable future for all. 👉 What changes would you like to see in our food systems over the next five years? #FoodSystems #Sustainability #PlanetaryBoundaries #ClimateAction #SocialEquity #Innovation

🌱 What are the three biggest problems facing the food system today? 🌍 In this first episode of our new series: In Conversation: Food Systems and Planetary Boundaries, Christina Hicks from Lancaster University and Johan Rockström from the PIK - Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research dive into the pressing challenges that our global food system faces today. According to them, the three biggest issues threatening our food systems are: 1️⃣ Social Inequalities: Over 1 billion people globally suffer from malnutrition, highlighting the deep-rooted inequalities within our food systems. 2️⃣ Planetary Boundaries: Food production is the largest single driver pushing us beyond our planet’s ecological limits, threatening sustainability. 3️⃣ Food Insecurity and Conflict: There's a strong link between food insecurity, conflict, and other social insecurities, making it a key issue in global stability. Our food systems are at the heart of human health, sustainability, and security. It's time we come together to find innovative solutions to create a more equitable and sustainable future for all. #FoodSystems #Sustainability #PlanetaryBoundaries #SocialImpact #FoodSecurity #ClimateChange #Innovation
