Another great Food Day @ETH Zürich! 🤩 Every year, our friends at the World Food System Center, ETH Zurich organise Food Day to explore how research and innovation can accelerate the transition to sustainable food systems. This year, we hosted a session on the topic of ultra-processed food, moderated by Katarzyna (Kash) Winek, MBA from the Valley team. The result? An engaging exchange with diverse audience of 60+ attendees from academia, industry and government. Achieving zero hunger by 2030 is essential, yet 1 in 11 people worldwide experienced hunger in 2023. With a global population set to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, ensuring access to nutritionally complete diets is more critical than ever. Indoor farming in Switzerland is about to reach a whole new level thanks to this amazing win 🌱🇨🇭👇 Indoor farming pioneer and Valley partner UMAMI has just raised a massive CHF 4.3 million to build an industrial-scale farm in Zurich, increasing their production capacity five-fold: 🚜The farm will use a sustainable circular system that reduces water usage by 90% and land usage by 89% compared to traditional methods.  🌱UMAMI supplies premium microgreens and herbs to over 450 stores and 400 restaurants across Switzerland and they have big plans to meet growing demand for local, pesticide-free food.  ☁️The funds will also support the development of organic fertilizer technology, reducing CO2 emissions, and research on expanding its product range to include crops like tomatoes and strawberries. Swiss startup and Valley partner sallea has raised $2.6 million in a pre-seed round 💰👏 The funding will allow them to support the development of its plant-based "scaffolds" for producing cultured meat so producers can create whole cuts like steaks and fillets with a better texture and nutritional profiles.
