We asked our Design Director: "Do you create a new design for each new ship?" “The designs of our ships are the result of over 50 years of experience and are constantly being improved.” Says Alex. “So each new ship is not completely redesigned, but precisely that good basis for which Scylla is known offers room to further innovate each time parts. Welcome to the second part of our New Build series, where our Design Director Alex Jansen and Naval Architect Bart Vos tell us how we start building a new ship. “Of course it all starts with a question from one of our clients, the tour operator” says Alex. “We sit down with them around the table to listen to their specific requirements.” “In addition, we obviously have to take into account specific cruising area where the ship will be sailing. Last weekend, our new group of trainee engineers arrived for their first week of training, eager to dive into their practical module. They were warmly welcomed by the STC, a specialized educational institution in the shipping industry, where they will gain expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering. After completing their practical week on Saturday, they will return to the ships to apply their new skills. We wish them the best of luck! 🎉 Festa de Santo António e da Na Sra da Boa Viagem 🎉✨ On the weekend of June 16 and 17, the municipality of Castelo de Paiva had the Festivities in Honor of Santo António and Nossa Senhora da Boa Viagem in Fornos. Also one of our ships, MS ANDORINHA, was part of the festivities. Bruno Alves, captain of the ship, says: "The replica of our MS ANDORINHA, shown during the procession, is a tribute to the connection of the inhabitants of Castelo de Paiva to the ship. During the Covid period as well as during the winter season the ship was moored at their village for a long time." 51 years ago, in 1973, André & Martha Reitsma bought a tugboat, converted it into a river cruise ship and named the ship “Scylla.” Meanwhile, Scylla grew into one of the leading companies of luxury river cruise ships in Europe. Each ship is designed and built entirely in-house, making Scylla unique in the industry. Earlier this month, the 40th ship was delivered, MS Porto Mirante, which will sail on the Portuguese Douro. And that's not all, as Scylla plans to build at least 3 new ships a year through 2027. So a big challenge awaits Scylla's “New Build” team.
