💡 August Market Volatility: key drivers and future outlook August saw a sharp but brief market decline due to a mix of narratives. Key factors include: ✔ U.S. employment data: Rising unemployment signals recession fears, impacting investor confidence. ✔Sector performance: The industrial sector’s outperformance contradicted economic slowdown concerns. ✔Yen carry trade: Surprising comments from the Bank of Japan led to a swift unwinding of yen positions. ✔Tech stocks correction: High valuations and disappointing earnings led investors to take profits from major tech stocks. Despite the volatility, recent data suggest a soft landing for the U.S. economy. As we move forward, the U.S job market will be crucial for economic health, while attention shift to upcoming U.S elections and potential Federal Reserve actions. Our Macroeconomic Expert John Plassard examines the key insights from the Jackson Hole Economic Symposium held last Friday. ✔️A shift in Fed policy: Jerome Powell, Chairman of the Federal Reserve, announced that "the time has come for policy to adjust." This signals potential interest rate cuts in September, marking a shift from the Fed's previous stance on inflation control. ✔️Economic indicators to watch: The Fed's future rate cuts will depend on upcoming economic data, such as employment figures and inflation trends. Key dates include: - U.S. GDP growth (2nd estimate) - August 29 - July's PCE Inflation - August 30 - U.S. Employment Report for August - September 6 - August's CPI Inflation - September 11 ✔️Market reactions and predictions: Markets have reacted strongly, with investors now fully anticipating a rate cut in September. Analysts are divided on whether it will be a 25 or 50 basis point cut. ✔️Political implications: The timing of the Fed’s decision is sensitive, with the upcoming presidential election in November.
