This talk on ‘Challenges in Access to New Oncology Medicines’ at #ESMO2024 was really fascinating, particularly around inequalities for patients. A lot of food for thought about the challenges of the various steps required in of making treatments available and accessible to patients. It’s a multilayered issue with multiple stakeholders looking at it from various standpoints. Our FRIDAY NEWS this week comes from Finland where Suomen Keuhkosyöpäpotilaat presented a patients’ petition on September 4th. The petition points out that Finland is among the weakest in lung cancer treatment outcomes in EU. Lung cancer is the third most common cancer in Finland and is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Suomen keuhkosyöpäpotilaat states that in Finland, limited research, delayed diagnoses, outdated legislation and bureaucratic hurdles - along with a lack of diverse treatment options - result in unnecessary premature deaths and significant suffering.
