To decarbonise the built environment, we need to tackle whole life carbon by shifting away from fossil fuels and fossil-based materials. We need frameworks in place that provide pathways for the industry and businesses on their transition journey to ensure targets are met. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has launched a sector-specific science-based framework for companies and financial institutions in the buildings value chain to set 1.5°C-aligned emissions reduction targets. An important step towards creating a net-zero buildings industry, providing businesses across the value chain with the tools to play their part, taking into account sector-specific barriers and opportunities to enable the development of targets within the unique context of the sector. Highlights of the new criteria include: ✅ Companies using the criteria must commit to no new fossil fuel installations and halve emissions by 2030 at the latest. ✅The framework now covers global 1.5°C pathways for upfront embodied emissions, including materials production and construction of new buildings. ✅A ‘whole building approach’ covering all energy consumption and fugitive emissions (e.g. leakage) from buildings’ operations. ✅Regional pathways for in-use emissions (those associated with buildings’ energy use) so that targets reflect variations in local power grids and how buildings are used. 🍽 In 2023, we explored the deep structural issues in the food industry and the role that Laudes Foundation could play to accelerate a green, fair and inclusive transition for the sector - a learning journey built across 12 partnerships and EUR 1.3 million in grants.   🤝 One such partnership was to support the first European Coolfood Pledge Summit, to explore how cities and businesses can collaborate to advance more climate-friendly meals. Spotlighting climate change's impact on workers and vulnerable communities As part of our Labour Rights and Narratives programmes, Laudes Foundation works with the Pulitzer Center to support their work covering underreported stories, highlighting the interconnection between climate issues and their impact on labour, particularly with vulnerable workers and communities. The initiative has amplified important stories globally and in local, national, and international outlets, raising awareness and facilitating dialogues between workers, decision makers, and supporters of the climate and labour cause, and in cases leading to concrete outcomes like policy review and sparking self-organised campaigns. That's why we're committed to bringing our partners together to share knowledge, spark new ideas, and forge lasting connections.    Our first-ever Laudes Partner Gathering in March 2023 was a testament to this commitment. We had the privilege of hosting over 100 partners, 20+ senior team members and governors to discuss the future of our work.    The result? Proposal proposals covering Czechia, Denmark, Ireland, and Italy will also be considered. 🛣 In the journey towards robust climate action and a just transition (i.e., the intersection of decarbonisation actions and ensuring this is just for affected workers and/or residents and their communities), establishing effective accountability systems is vital.
