Utilizing corrosion data from the National Center for Materials Corrosion and Protection Science of China, a dataset was constructed for metal-surface corrosion under different protective coatings. This dataset was used for model training, testing, and comparison. Model accuracy was validated using precision, recall, F1 score, and prediction probability. The results demonstrate that the proposed improved model exhibits better identification precision in metal corrosion detection, achieving 78%, a 4% improvement compared to traditional YOLO v5 models. Additionally, through identification and statistical analysis of corrosion image datasets from five types of coated metal specimens, it was found that powder epoxy coating, fluorocarbon coating, epoxy coating, and chlorinated rubber coating showed good corrosion resistance after 24 months of exposure. Conversely, Wuxi anti-fouling coating exhibited poor corrosion resistance. After 60 months of natural exposure, the powder epoxy coating specimens had the highest corrosion occurrence probability, followed by chlorinated rubber coating and epoxy coating, with fluorocarbon coating showing relatively lower probability. The fluorocarbon coating demonstrated relatively good corrosion resistance at both 24 and 60 months of exposure. The findings of this study provide a theoretical basis for enhancing the corrosion protection effectiveness of steel structures in coastal areas.

  • 💡 #Newpaper in 2024 🌊 Title: A Novel, Finite-Time, Active Fault-Tolerant Control Framework for Autonomous Surface Vehicle with Guaranteed Performance 🔑 Keywords: #faulttolerant control; guaranteed performance; model uncertainties; #autonomoussurfacevehicle; active fault-tolerant #control 🔗 Read More: https://lnkd.in/dTZ3cMa2 📜 Abstract: In this paper, a finite-time, active fault-tolerant control (AFTC) scheme is proposed for a class of autonomous surface vehicles (ASVs) with component faults. The designed AFTC framework is based on an integrated design of fault detection (FD), fault estimation (FE), and controller reconfiguration. First, a nominal controller based on the Barrier Lyapunov function is presented, which guarantees that the tracking error converges to the predefined performance constraints within a settling time. Then, a performance-based monitoring function with low complexity is designed to supervise the tracking behaviors and detect the fault. Different from existing results where the fault is bounded by a known scalar, the FE in this study is implemented by a finite-time estimator without requiring any prioir information of fault. Furthermore, under the proposed finite-time AFTC scheme, both the transient and steady-state performance of the ASV can be guaranteed regardless of the occurrence of faults. Finally, a simulation example on CyberShip II is given to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed AFTC method.

The worldwide increase in oil and gas demand, and the parallel rise in oil and gas production, exploiting particularly coastal and offshore marine deposits, have significantly increased the risk of accidental oil release to the sea. In the present study, an operational oil spill model was applied to test the oil dispersive properties and to reveal the relative magnitude of weathering processes, after an accidental oil spill release along the main tanker transportation route in the North Aegean Sea. Numerical simulations were implemented using the OpenOil transport and fate numerical model, a subclass of the OpenDrift open-source trajectory framework. This model integrates algorithms with several physical processes, such as oil entrainment, vertical mixing, oil resurfacing and oil emulsification. The oil dispersion model was coupled to real-time met-ocean forecasts received from NOAA-GFS and CMEMS. Present simulation results have focused on the impact of turbulent kinetic energy, induced by the background flow field, on the horizontal spreading of particles, as well as on the evolution of oil mass balance and oil mass properties.

💡 #Highcitedpaper #KRISO(Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering) 🌊 Title: Multi-Modal Sonar Mapping of Offshore Cable Lines with an Autonomous Surface Vehicle 🔑 Keywords: #autonomous surface vehicle; #sonarmapping; multibeam #echosounder; side scan sonar; #offshore cable lines 🔗 Read More: https://lnkd.in/dAuKypQh 📜 Abstract: Monitoring offshore infrastructure is a challenging task owing to the harsh ocean environment. To reduce human involvement in this task, this study proposes an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV)-based structural monitoring system for inspecting power cable lines under the ocean surface. The proposed ASV was equipped with multimodal sonar sensors, including a multibeam echosounder (MBES) and side-scan sonar (SSS) for mapping the seafloor, combined with a precisely estimated vehicle pose from navigation sensors. In particular, a globally consistent map was developed using the orthometric height as a vertical datum estimated based on the geoid height received from the GPS. Accordingly, the MBES and SSS generate a map of the target objects in the form of point clouds and sonar images, respectively. Dedicated outlier removal methods for MBES sensing were proposed to preserve the sparse inlier point cloud, and we applied the projection of the SSS image pixels to reflect the geometry of the seafloor. A field test was conducted in an ocean environment using real offshore cable lines to verify the efficiency of the proposed monitoring system.

Considering their contrasting characteristics, the present work aims to investigate climate change impacts in salt intrusion and estuarine plumes interaction, through an integrated hydrological characterization. The three-dimensional numerical model Delft3D was implemented to explore the hydrological response of these two systems taking into account their interaction. The model was applied to investigate two different climate change scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5), where physical variables such as sea level and river outflow were varied following summer and winter conditions. The numerical results revealed typically estuarine hydrological patterns, although some different features were found for each estuary. The head and mouth of the estuaries may be the zones most affected by climate change. In the first zone, the salinity may increase in the future in response to freshwater reduction from the Minho and Lima rivers. Considering the cumulative impact of the sea level rise, the saline intrusion may increase in the future: in the Minho estuary it reaches 14 km for the Present scenario during the dry season, penetrating further under climate change conditions (15 km for the RCP 4.5 scenario, and 17 km for the RCP 8.5 scenario); in the Lima estuary, the salt propagates further inland, reaching 17 km for the Present scenario, 18 km for the RCP 4.5 scenario, and a maximum of 20 km for the RCP 8.5 scenario. In all scenarios, during winter conditions, the estuarine plumes are larger and wider, being predicted that in the future they will reduce their dimensions during the winter period, and remain unchanged during summertime. Concisely, this modelling study provided more expertise about the physical patterns of these two estuaries and their interaction, as well as to anticipate the climate change impacts in their dynamics.

Indeed, the functionality of gametes and their interactions may be negatively affected by reduced pH. Susceptibility to other environmental stressors, such as pollutants, may be also altered under acidified conditions, resulting in more detrimental effects. To verify this hypothesis, combined exposures to CO2-driven acidification and environmentally relevant concentrations (0.5 µg/L) of three contaminants (caffeine, diclofenac, and PFOS, all singularly or in mixture) were carried out to highlight potential negative effects on fertilization success and motility of sperm in the sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. Our results showed a significant reduction in the percentage of fertilized eggs when sperm were pre-exposed to reduced pH (ambient pH minus 0.4 units) compared to that of controls (ambient, pH = 8.1). Sperm speed and motility also decreased when sperm were activated and then exposed at reduced pH. Conversely, at both pH values tested, no significant effect due to the contaminants, nor of their interaction with pH, was found on any of the biological endpoints considered.

  • 💡#Newpaper in 2024 🌊Title: Fuzzy Logic-Based Decision-Making Method for Ultra-Large Ship Berthing Using Pilotage Data 🔑Keywords: #decisionmaking#fuzzylogic#ship #berthing; water #transportation 🔗More at: https://lnkd.in/dAH7jZsQ 📜Abstract: As seafarers are involved in Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS), except for those in the fourth level of autonomy, the decision making of autonomous berthing should be carried out and be understood by human beings. This paper proposes a fuzzy logic-based human-like decision-making method for ultra-large ship berthing, which considers locations, ship particulars and the natural environment, and these factors are treated as the input variables. The IF–THEN rules are then established after the fuzzification of the input variables and are used for fuzzy inference to derive the decision of ship handling. It can be implemented in the decision-making system for safe navigation or be included in the process of autonomous berthing. The pilotage data are collected with nautical instruments and a distance measurement system during the berthing process, which are used to validate the proposed model and calculate the speed and turn errors. The overall and individual error of the decision-making model is in a reasonable and small range, which indicates that the model has good accuracy. The results of this research offer theoretical and practical insights into the development of a human-like decision-making method for autonomous navigation in port waters and maritime safety management in the shipping industry. The model can be further applied to develop a more widely applicable decision-making system for autonomous navigation in confined waters.

  • 💡 #Newpaper in 2024 🌊 Title: Elastoplastic Solution of Cylindrical Cavity Expansion in Unsaturated Offshore Island Soil Considering Anisotropy 🔑 Keywords: #unsaturatedsoil#anisotropy; cylindrical #cavity expansion; #elastoplastic solution; #offshore 🔗 Read More: https://lnkd.in/dsBGNy8J 📜 Abstract: An elastoplastic analysis scheme for the cylindrical cavity expansion in offshore islands unsaturated soils considering anisotropy is established. The hydraulic properties and anisotropy caused by stress of unsaturated soils are coupled in an elastoplastic constitutive matrix for unsaturated soil to obtain the governing equations for the cylindrical cavity expansion problem, with an analytical solution that utilizes the original hydro-mechanical state of the soil as the initial conditions. Through a comparative analysis with other analytical solutions, the effectiveness of the new solution is verified. Moreover, the swelling response of the cylindrical cavity expansion in unsaturated soils is examined by systematically analyzing different parameters of the surrounding soil. The findings reveal that the development and rate of anisotropy in normal consolidated soil and over-consolidated soil exert a significant impact on the soil’s mechanical characteristics. Nevertheless, the alteration in the model constant h has little effect on the soil’s mechanical characteristics. The analytical solution introduces anisotropy and broadens the expansion theory of unsaturated soils to yield a more comprehensive theoretical framework for the comprehensive analysis of offshore islands’ unsaturated soils.
