Using satellite images and field surveys, researchers at the Università degli Studi di Cagliari analyzed post-fire vegetation recovery along the edges of a large Mediterranean wildfire, focusing on woodland patches with a normalized burn ratio (NBR) decline, one year post-fire. Delayed tree mortality was identified as a key factor linked to NBR decline, and it was observed mainly near the edges of the burned area. Since these areas are crucial for post-fire succession and vegetation dynamics, understanding the second-order effects of fire is vital for effective ecosystem management. This study emphasizes the importance of long-term observation in understanding the enduring impacts of wildfires and informing restoration strategies.
