Inaugural Quantum Center Research Fellowships awarded We are pleased to announce that the first Quantum Center Research Fellowships have been awarded to Lorenzo Dania, Clara Galante Agero and Frieder Lindel. The Quantum Center Research Fellowship programme is endowed by the “Dr. Alfred and Flora Spälti Fonds“ and the "Heidi Ras Foundation" and funds PhD students and postdocs hosted by member groups of the Quantum Center at ETH Zürich. The fellowships support innovative, original research that aligns with the interests of the host group while fostering the fellow's independence. In addition, each fellow helps to bring together the doctoral and postdoctoral community in the Quantum Center, for example by organizing technical exchanges or social activities. Lorenzo Dania completed his PhD at Universität Innsbruck in December 2023, working on hybrid quantum systems with charged nanoparticles and atomic ions. In 2023, he joined the Photonics Laboratory of Lukas Novotny (ETH Zurich, Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering), where now, as a Quantum Center Research Fellow, he is studying the birth and death of large quantum states of motion using optically levitated nanoparticles. Clara Galante studied physics at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and at ETH Zürich. She completed her Master's thesis in physics at ETH, focusing on gate-defined Josephson junctions in magic-angle twisted four-layer graphene. In June 2024, Clara started her PhD thesis in the Nanophysics Group of Klaus Ensslin, supervised by Thomas Ihn (D-PHYS, ETH Zürich). As a Quantum Center Research Fellow she will work in the same group on gate-defined qubits in bilayer-graphene quantum dots. Frieder Lindel received his PhD from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau in June 2024, where he worked on the detection of quantum states of light in space and time and their use for optimal control. In March 2024, he started a postdoctoral position at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. From February 2025, Frieder will be a Quantum Center Research Fellow in the groups of Eugene Demler and Jerome Faist (both at D-PHYS, ETH Zürich), where he will explore ways to control emergent phenomena in quantum many-body systems by strongly coupling them to tailored vacuum fluctuations in a cavity.
