How can we harmonize different data sources to provide more regionalized and disaggregated environmental data? At the Ökobilanzwerkstatt 2024 in Stuttgart, I had the pleasure of presenting the challenges we face at ecoinvent in combining production and trade data, specifically in the coal sector, and discussing potential solutions. One insightful question that left many attendees reflecting: how should we, in the LCA community, account for unallocated emission sources like methane emissions from abandoned mines, which are underestimated but are becoming more quantifiable thanks to innovative approaches applied by organizations like Global Energy Monitor, Climate TRACE, and Ember? It was also great to see contributions from key players like Mercedes-Benz AG, MTU Aero Engines, and Sphera, demonstrating how collaboration between science and industry can drive innovation in sustainability. I was particularly impressed by the developments and challenges in the space sector! Thank you to Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP and the University of Stuttgart Institute of Acoustics and Building Physics for the fantastic organization and warm atmosphere! #ÖBW24 #ecoinvent #lifecycleassessment #sustainability #climatedata #methaneemissions #environmentaldata Photo credits: Fraunhofer Institute for Building Physics IBP and Dennis Michael Jöckel
