Young Leaders for Healthy Societies – WHO Youth Council 2024 | Young Leaders Conference The three-day conference hosted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung and World Health Organization - packed with panels, presentations, protocol meetings, fun and laughter - culminated Saturday in an intergenerational dialogue led by two highly respected female leaders: Catharina Boehme, WHO, alongside with Ilona Kickbusch, president of the Digital Transformations for Health Lab, both urged conference attendees to keep pushing ahead. There’ s a lot at stake. The question new health leaders will need to address is as simple as it is difficult: How do we want to live? In times when some political forces are pulling us into the past, when trust is eroding, where hope is shattered by external shocks, this question, first raised by the late German sociologist Ulrich Beck, is becoming ever more pressing. To cope, new health leaders must therefore focus on six main challenges, Ilona Kickbusch says: 1) Planetary health: If the planet we live on isn’t healthy, none of us will be. 2) Social solidarity: The social contract is crumbling in our societies - it is exposed to individualism, othering, and a resurging far right. How, then, do you fill “solidarity” with life? 3) Civic interaction: What does democracy mean? Who has voice? What does voice mean in countries where the majority of the population is young? 4) Digital transformation: It bears huge opportunities, but what does it do us as a society? 5) Gender: There are different forms of sexuality, and even without acknowledging sexual diversity and choice, the enormous discrimination of women and girls is going on everywhere. Think femicide, care work, and the #underwatereconomy. 6) Multilateralism: Many rules don’t work anymore, others were perhaps never adhered to. But you do need a framework to interact globally. You do need rules. In closing, Ilona Kickbusch urges the attendees to think very hard: What rules do you want!? YOU have to write them! To drive change, both Ilona Kickusch and Catharina Boehme have some advice to attendees: - Use the power of science - Advocate – not only on issues but on structures and governance - Build partnerships and alliances - Grasp opportunities, don’t plan everything - Be passionate about what they want to achieve - Keep pushing towards awareness raising - Fight for your voice to be heard. Voice is power - and power is never given up voluntarily. It was a colorful conference with amazing young people. We hope that you took a lot away with you. It was a great pleasure for us to co-host this conference! Thank you for participating. 🙏 And we can tell this much: We'll be hearing from you soon. #WHOYouthCouncil #MyHealthFutures #Youth4HealthySocieties WHO Youth Council Katja Čič Whitney Gray Iris M. ✨#Day 2 of the International Youth Conference, Young Leaders for Healthy Societies co-organized by Bertelsmann Stiftung, and World Health Organization with support from World Health Summit was packed with hands on co-creation. ✨We commenced with the #DigitalDeterminantsofHealth workshop, where #RegionalYouthChampions received an advance briefing on the contents of an upcoming Lancet series and the main recommendations and calls to action to policymakers, tech companies and other groups. ✨They came up with a brilliant youth-led campaign about different on and offline activities to engage young people and drive change among the key stakeholder groups identified in the Lancet series. The goal of this campaign is to popularise the main messages and recommendations from the Lancet series among young people around the world and catalyse a movement to drive action on the #DDoH. ✨Together with our partners from Universität Wien | University of Vienna #DataSolidarity project #RYCs discussed avenues for promoting #DataSolidarity and good #Governance practices globally. ✨The day came to an end with an interesting #plenary discussing call to actions of the soon to be launched #YouthDeclaration and the role of #YouthLeadership in creating healthy societies. This was followed by the Berlin Festival of Lights walking tour. Time to kick off Day 3!⭐️ Healthcare Program #WHOYouthCouncil #MyHealthFutures #Youth4HealthySocieties

#Day1 of the International Youth Conference, Young Leaders for Healthy Societies co-organized by Bertelsmann Stiftung, and World Health Organization with support from @World Health Summit was inspiring as the young leaders sparked meaningful conversations to address challenges in #globalhealth. 🎯In her opening remarks, Brigitte M. Board Member Bertelsmann Stiftung emphasized to young leaders the critical importance of their involvement in shaping the future, with vital words stating, “WE NEED YOU” to ensure #youthinvolvement, and #engagement in creating healthy societies. 🎯#GlobalHealthLeaders - State Minister Dr. Tobias Lindner (German Foreign Office) Dr. Gaudenz Silberschmidt (World Health Organization) and Prof. Axel Radlach Pries (World Health Summit) also encouraged the young leaders to shift from despair to hope embracing an engagement approach, to change things for the better, and to serve as role models for the world in the area of health, promoting resilience, trust, and positive well-being. 🎯The conference featured two engaging panels on Creating Healthy Societies, focusing on discussions around barriers, enablers, best practices, and policy ideas addressing global health challenges. 🎯Young leaders not only engaged in meaningful dialogue but also participated in a lively human bingo session and DTH-Lab #RegionalYouthChampions executed a #hackathon where they pitched innovative proposals to create a platform for launching a #digitalhealthcitizenship toolkit, reinforcing their vital role in shaping healthier societies. #WHOYouthCouncil #MyHealthFutures #Youth4HealthySocieties
