Child Labour in Cocoa: Perspectives and Solutions Child labour remains a pressing issue in the global cocoa supply chain and is rooted in the poverty of cocoa farmers. To mark today’s #WorldDayAgainstChildLabour, the Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa is releasing a new publication that provides an overview of the complex issue and suggests measures that companies can take to navigate recently adopted legislation at the Swiss and European levels that introduce new human rights due diligence obligations and prevent and remediate child labour. 🌍 How much does a farmer household in Ghana earn? What would it take for them to achieve a living income? Today, Ghana Cocoa Board-COCOBOD and Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa proudly presented the results of their Joint Cocoa Household Income Study, at the Trade for Sustainable Development (T4SD) Forum hosted by the International Trade Centre . This study sheds light on how much Ghanaian cocoa households earn, the factors affecting their incomes, and the impact of Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa /SECO Economic Cooperation and Development programmes. The presentation comes just in time with yesterday’s announcement of Cocobod’s new farm gate price. Increasing producer price is a key action area, along with others, to close the still big living income gap we identified. The study will be openly published by November 2024. 📅 Save the date for the online presentation of the CHIS Methodology and results in Ghana and other countries: 12th Nov 2024, 15:00 CET. More information will follow soon. A huge thank you to the research team from @Cocobod, Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, BFH-HAFL and ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences; all the committed Swissco members and partners who joined today’s session! Isaac Manu (PhD), Joseph Bandanaa (Ph.D.), Johan Blockeel, Rebecca Schmid, Ingrid Fromm, PhD, Katharina Ineichen --- This study is being conducted in close collaboration with a sector-wide methodology to assess cocoa farmers' incomes. It is a joint effort between Wageningen University & Research, KIT, World Cocoa Foundation, Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), German Initiative on Sustainable Cocoa and all Alliance on Living Income in Cocoa (#ALICO) members. Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa's approach of tackling challenges together materialises also in cocoa producing regions. One example is the Landscape project in Sambirano, Madagascar led by Helvetas, implemented in cooperation with Centre for Development and Environment (CDE), University of Bern and myclimate, supported by Lindt Cocoa Foundation, Lindt & Sprüngli, Migros-Genossenschafts-Bund, Walter Matter SA, Max Felchlin AG, PRONATEC AG, Villars Maître Chocolatier Groupe Savencia, Touton SA and SECO Economic Cooperation and Development . Last week, Christian Robin and Nicoletta Lumaldo from the Coordination Office visited the region together with Maya Wolfensberger Malo from Helvetas. This megadiverse valley produces 90% of Madagascar’s cocoa – predominantly fine flavour cocoa. But it is threatened by #climatechange, marked by longer dry periods and heavier rainfalls that lead to inundation and accelerated land erosion. Main drivers of deforestation in both open and protected areas are mostly related to rice and charcoal production as well as illegal cannabis plantations. To resolve these issues, enhanced forest protection, reforestation, water source protection, and sustainable forest management are paramount, as well as diversification and improved agroforestry systems at the farm level, and securing land tenure, all undertaken by the project. Common challenges require concerted efforts. The “Climate-Resilient Cocoa Landscapes” project in the Sambirano watershed in northwestern Madagascar is the multistakeholder initiative gathering key actors to tackle challenges together. Among these, we met the Comité de Gestion du Bassin versant du Sambirano, the Conseil National du Cacao, members from the private sector such as Madagascar Flavors, Ramanandraibe Exportation SA, Etablissement Théodule, Sambirano SA / Sambirano Ingredients, Societe Commerciale Industrielle de Madagascar, the research institute FOFIFA, and of course, the cocoa producers and collectors. Merci à toutes et tous pour votre temps. Particular thanks go to all the Helvetas Madagascar team for organising this field trip and explaining everything to us ! The so-called Cocoa Swollen Shoot Virus Disease (CSSVD) is spreading rapidly in West Africa. Sanja Fabrio from SwissDeCode explains why early detection of the virus is crucial. She also talks about a soon-to-be-launched project that aims to find cocoa varieties that are climate resilient, less susceptible to disease and also produce a good yield - a potential game changer for the cocoa sector. #CSSVD #Remediation #Sustainability #SustainableCocoa #Deforestation #CocoaSwollenShootVirus #DNAFoil

Today at the Swiss Green Economy Symposium 2024, Melchior Lengsfeld, Executive Director of Helvetas, called on participants from the business world to get involved in the Swiss Platform for Sustainable Cocoa and the newly founded Swiss Sustainable Coffee Platform Fabian Waldmeier CEO of Fairtrade Max Havelaar, called for greater cooperation and joint learning to solve the current pressing problems: "People often talk about their flagship projects. But we should also address the points where there are problems". Multi-stakeholder platforms offer a space for open dialogue, he said.

The Cocoa Household Income Study (CHIS) methodology is an effort to harmonise how we measure the income of cocoa farming households. As part of this effort, we have partnered with the Ghana Cocoa Board-COCOBOD to do a Joint CHIS. You can find more info here 👇 https://lnkd.in/d8x92n5t. The results of the study will be presented soon!
Farmer income is one of the key elements of #SustainableCocoa. In collaboration with KIT Institute, Wageningen University & Research, and other partners, we formed the Alliance on Living Income in Cocoa (ALICO) and launched a pilot study to develop a new methodology for measuring cocoa household income. This initiative aims to set standards that enhance farmers’ livelihoods by ensuring better sampling and fair representation. WCF experts shared their foresight for the methodology.
