Our therapy specifically targets #inhibitory #interneurons, whose reduced activity in Alzheimer’s leads to the overexcitation of excitatory neurons, resulting in calcium overload and #neuronal #death. Our #personalized 40 Hz #stimulation aims to restore the activity of these interneurons in the brain's affected regions, potentially preventing further cognitive decline. These PV interneurons, known for their ability to fire at high frequencies, are vital for maintaining healthy neural circuits. Dysfunctional PV neurons are linked to various disorders characterized by network disruptions and cognitive decline, including #Alzheimer’s disease (AD). This review highlights PV interneuron impairment as a key driver of AD and related memory issues. Bottneuro AG is a cutting-edge medtech startup revolutionizing the diagnosis and treatment of neurological diseases, and a resident company at our Novartis Campus site. This promising spin-off from the Department of Biomedical Engineering | University of Basel focuses on non-invasive treatments for Alzheimer's and other neurological disorders. Bottneuro's innovative approach includes electrical stimulation of specific brain regions—a promising treatment for conditions like Alzheimer's. Given the uniqueness of each brain, the stimulation caps are custom-made for each patient. In collaboration with ETH Zürich, Bottneuro has developed a fully digitalized process for designing and manufacturing these caps, from helmet shape design to electrode positioning and 3D printing.
