Serena Williams admits bshe once tried to cash a $1 million cheque in an ATM

Serena Williams has confessed she once tried to cash a $1 million cheque from her tennis winnings through an ATM. 

Speaking with Hot Ones host Sean Evans, the tennis star was asked if this hilarious moment was a true story. 

"I never really spent a lot of money. I was just so serious. I don't know what happened to me. I used to be serious," she explained.

"So I just went to the drive-through, and the guy was like, 'Uh, I think you need to come inside for this,'" she said before adding it was one of life's "lessons to learn."

Hot Ones involves interviewing celebrities while eating chicken wings that progressively increase in spice levels.

Williams shared that she didn't play tennis to win money but because she loved the sport so much. 

"I never played for money. I played because I loved the sport. I wanted to be the best. I wanted to win. I didn't even know at the time if I wanted to be the best. I just wanted to win," the 23-time grand slam tennis champion said.

"My tax guy, he would be like, 'You didn't get your money,' and I was like, 'You didn't get your money,' and I would be like, 'Oh, I didn't get that one in Zurich, I forgot that one in Moscow.' I was just playing to win, and if I didn't win, I was just not thinking," she added.

"I was just so angry I wanted to just figure out a way to get better and win the next time."

Williams retired from tennis in 2022, announcing the news in a Vogue article: "Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don't think it's fair." 

"If I were a guy, I wouldn't be writing this because I'd be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labour of expanding our family."
