UPDATE: UIHC Boyd Tower elevator fire extinguished

UPDATE: 2:28pm A small fire occurred outside Boyd Tower this morning. Due to the location of the fire, smoke entered the building. All patients and staff were safely evacuated.

The UIHC Safety and Security team is currently assessing each floor prior to allowing patients and staff to return.

UPDATE 11:49am: Officials confirm the fire is out at UIHC. They are resuming normal activity.

At 11:14am on Friday a HAWK ALERT went out reporting an elevator fire in UIHC's Boyd Tower.

The Iowa City Fire Department is on scene.

Boyd Tower is on the north side of the general hospital.

An evacuation is in progress.

University officials are asking the public to avoid the area.
