Nursing is a respected profession that requires physical stamina, a solid scientific knowledge base, psychological health, keen assessment skills, manual dexterity, and the ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse groups of people.
The Registered Nursing Program is a two-year associate in science degree program. Upon completion of this program of study, approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, students are eligible for licensure as registered nurses. Registered nurses care for patients and clients in hospitals, schools, clinics, homes, and a variety of health care settings. Nursing students take classes with both theory and clinical experience in medical surgical, geriatric, maternal-child, mental health, and child-family nursing. Nursing students have classes in pharmacology, psychology, sociology, and human communication. The program is accredited from the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, and program approval from the California Board of Registered Nursing.
Program options include the Career Mobility Program for Licensed Vocational Nurses, Licensed Psychiatric Technicians, and those with military healthcare experience to become Registered Nurses. Students are admitted to the RN Program after completing prerequisites, completion of proficiency exams and skills testing on a space-available basis.
Cypress College Health Science programs require that students complete full vaccination status against COVID-19, including booster, prior to entry into the program as a result of clinical sites’ requirements. No exemptions or alternative measures will be considered and any disregard to this policy or falsifying of documentation may result in violation of BP 5500 Standards of Student Conduct and result in disciplinary actions.

The Cypress College nursing faculty ascribes to the core competencies for nursing and nursing education identified by the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project. While firmly based in science and the arts, the essence of nursing is caring and compassionate patient centered care. Ethical standards, respect for individual dignity, and consideration of cultural context are implicit in the practice of patient-centered care. The nurse advocates for patients and families in ways that promote self-determination, integrity, and ongoing growth as human beings. Nursing care is provided in collaboration with the patient, the family and members of the health care team. The nurse displays a spirit of inquiry by examining evidence to improve quality of care, promote safety and improve patient outcomes. Nursing judgment is integral to making competent decisions related to the provision of safe and effective nursing care. In order to make informed clinical decisions, the nurse must have a firm foundation in and understanding of the concepts of oxygenation, regulation and movement. Information essential to nursing care is communicated via a variety of technological and human means. The adoption of these key philosophical components fosters the development of the nurse’s professional identity.

Frequently Asked Questions
Upon completion of this program, students will be awarded an AS degree. The Associate in Science in Nursing (ASN) is transferrable for BSN, MSN, DNP or PhD in Nursing.
Depending on the program and the number of units taken each semester, completing the program can take from two semesters to about two years. However, there may be additional requirements to get into the program. It is strongly recommended that students attend a workshop for more detailed information. The program is $46 per unit for California residents, not including books, fees, and supplies. Units vary by course but the average is 3-5 units per course. Estimated cost, in addition to the tuition, includes parking, health fees, materials fees, books, software, uniforms, clinical supplies, liability insurance, background check/drug test/document tracker and immunizations or titers. The total cost range can be estimated at $2,500- $5,250.
Graduates are qualified to work in hospitals, physicians’ offices, home healthcare services, and a variety of community sites such as outpatient clinics and schools, or serve in the military.
Teaching nursing has been my passion since 2004. I've been a full time faculty here at Cypress since 2012. I have experience as a simulation co-ordinator and a remediation specialist. My areas of expertise are med/surg and mental health. I graduated with an ADN from Mount St. Mary's College, BSN from Cal State LA and received my MSN, Ed. from Cal State Dominguez in 2009. My office hours are Monday & Tuesday 5:00pm to 6:30pm, Wednesday's 7:00pm-7:30pm (clinical students only) and Thursday's 8:00am - 11:00am. (hours very)
Thu Pham is a nursing faculty with experience working at community colleges and universities. Thu received her Doctorate of Nursing degree at the California State, Fullerton, and her master's and bachelor's degrees at the University of Utah School of Nursing. Thu started teaching at Cypress College in 2016, providing evidence-based practice instruction to a diverse student body. She used to work as a nurse practitioner in a university clinic setting and private clinic setting, which serve a diverse clientele population.

I am Dr. Michael Faraci and I am passionate about teaching nursing! I have been a Registered Nurse since 1999 specializing in Critical Care and Pediatrics. I remain current in the Nursing Practice by working Per-Diem at a large, academic medical institution in Los Angeles on a weekly basis. I have been teaching Nursing full-time at Cypress College since 2006. I currently teach Pediatrics, Advanced Medical Surgical Nursing, Pharmacology, as well as various electives.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Cypress College Nursing Program and introduce myself to you. I have taught for several years as a nursing professor at Cypress College. My nursing experience includes being a Registered Nurse for over 25 years. I have developed my nursing practice in various areas including Medical-Surgical, Telemetry, Oncology, Gastrointestinal Lab, Step-Down Unit, however the majority of my current nursing practice has been in Critical Care.

Nursing requires both passion and compassion. Presently, I teach both medical-surgical nursing and maternal nursing.
My nursing experience has been mainly in the Perinatal area, primarily as a Labor and Delivery Nurse working in local hospitals.
My name is Rose Kirby and I started teaching full-time at Cypress College in 2019. I was a bedside nurse for 6 years and worked in Medical-Surgical Nursing. I specialized in Orthopedics, Trauma, Vascular, Plastics, and Epilepsy monitoring. I have a passion for training the next generation of nurses and to equip them to be safe and caring practitioners.
I am a professor teaching Medical-Surgical Nursing and Geriatric Nursing at Cypress College. My other specialty areas include Community Nursing and Public Health. In addition to teaching the nursing courses, I have worked with the ESL Department to help English Language Learner (ELL) students improve their communication competency. elcome to the Cypress College Nursing Program! I have been with Cypress College since 2019 and have had the opportunity of working with students in the community college and private college settings. I have RN experience in emergency room, medical-surgical, geriatric, psychiatric, home-health, and PACU settings. I stay up to date with patient care by working per-diem as a Family Nurse Practitioner in the urgent care setting. I currently teach Intro to Medical-Surgical/Gerontology Nursing, Medical-Surgical 1, Pharmacology, and a variety of elective courses.
