Launched in January 2013, the standard was the first of its kind in the world. It’s a set of guidelines, tools and resources to help organizations promote mental health and prevent psychological harm in the workplace. “The more we talked with people, the more we heard that, ‘Yeah, we’ve got certain things in place but we don’t really know what to do next or how to move things forward,’” said Liz Horvath, manager of psychological health and safety at Opening Minds. The Opening Minds is now piloting an audit and assessment program with a select group of employers. The audit and assessment program will give employers a detailed report on the level of integration of the standard into their workplace and a customized action plan for where they should focus their efforts and resources going forward. In 2023, 7.5% of Scarborough Health Network’s workforce underwent The Working Mind training – a testament to the program’s growing impact. The team at SHN has witnessed a surge in interest, with the session’s waitlist expanding as employees and physicians have encouraged their peers to take the training. “People are becoming more comfortable with being proactive about their mental health. On behalf of AuditSoft I would like to congratulate the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association (IHSA) and Opening Minds | Changer les mentalités on this important and impactful initiative. Mental ill health is a significant cause of suicide and disability worldwide, and it has notably impacted the trades, specifically the construction industry. In Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom (UK), suicide rates are 2, 3, and 3.7 times higher amongst construction workers, respectively, than the national averages. United States (US) suicide among male construction workers is 4 times the national average. In Australia, construction workers are six times more likely to die from suicide than from workplace incidents; and in the US suicide among construction workers is 5 times higher than all construction-related deaths combined. In Canada, 83% of construction workers have experienced a mental health issue. Unfortunately, based on a recent US study the majority may not seek care when needed and one of the major reasons being the associated stigma in trades. Launching a training program designed to reduce stigma surrounding mental illness in trade-sector workplaces is a significant step in the right direction to protect our workers. Well done!
