These recent cuts don’t just slash budgets—they sever a crucial lifeline that Albertans rely on for immediate, accessible care. Shoppers Drug Mart recently sold the Health Clinic by Shoppers™, for much the same reason, and I understand Amazon is struggling with their Health offerings. Today, I want to reflect on a very difficult #decision I had to make lately to terminate Weller Pharmacy's agreement with Canada Health Infoway's PrescribeIT® platform, where I have been an early adopter and served as an "Ask Your Peer" consultant. While I have always been a staunch #advocate for #DigitalHealth and the secure, efficient systems that PrescribeIT® strives to provide, I cannot support a platform that imposes transaction fees solely on #Pharmacies. This new policy, set to take effect on January 1, 2025, unfairly places the financial burden of advancing e-prescribing solely on one segment of the healthcare system: #Pharmacy. Pharmacies are not just dispensaries; we are key partners in patient care and integral to the success of initiatives like Premier Doug Ford's “Axe the Fax.” Without full pharmacy participation, the healthcare system cannot achieve its vision of a modern, integrated, and digital-first future. Yet, this decision leaves us feeling undervalued and overlooked. The introduction of these fees is especially significant in the context of Preferred Provider Networks (PPN), which already place pharmacies under immense financial and operational pressures by negotiating lower dispensing fees and restricting patient choice. Adding a transaction fee on top of this exacerbates the strain on pharmacies and threatens the sustainability of our businesses. This is not just about fees—it’s about fairness. The healthcare system cannot thrive if policies disproportionately target the very players who ensure its success. My hope is that Canada Health Infoway reconsiders its approach and works toward a sustainable model that values the contributions of all stakeholders, especially pharmacies, whose commitment to patient care never wavers. To my colleagues in the pharmacy profession, I encourage you to reflect on how this impacts your practice and the communities you serve. Yesterday, our SVP Shelita Dattani, PharmD met with Dani Saad from the PMO to discuss National Pharmacare, highlighting our shared goals of improving access to prescription medications for Canadians and protecting the patient care and services that pharmacists provide. All Canadians should have access to drug coverage, whether through public or private prescription drug plans. Any new Pharmacare plan should prioritize caring for uninsured individuals and providing coverage for those who need it most, such as individuals with rare diseases who often face exceptionally high drug costs. We will continue to emphasize the crucial contribution of community pharmacy in the dialogue shaping National Pharmacare, ensuring that the voices of pharmacies and their teams are heard and that Canadians receive the comprehensive drug coverage they need. #NationalPharmacare #Advocacy #BillC64

Health Canada regulatory fake news. Site License Renewal - takes 3 to 4 months...NOT TRUE. Reality - 12 to 24 months depending on how many vendors you have on an import site license, how many brands are being manufacturing, packaged or labelled for those respective activities. New Site license - 3 to 4 months.....NOT TRUE Reality - 6 to 12 months The game has changed. Pre-covid was 3 to 4 months. Post covid 6+ months and it's only getting longer (based on our experience). I'm surprised to hear from prospects that consultants are still giving them the 3 to 4 month window. Why? To win the business and later disappoint them when they can't launch in Canada in a year when they forecast 6 months? If Health Canada delivers faster and, by some miracle, they suddenly start licensing businesses in 3 to 4 months then great! That's a bonus. At least there's an underpromise and an overdeliver. But don't bank on it or tell that to the prospect. Tell the truth and be brutally honest with brands. Legitimate, long term clients will appreciate it and stick with you far longer because the brutal honest truth will help them plan better and respect you as a service provider. #truth, #consulting, #healthcanada, #sitelicense,

The vast majority of cannabis purchases in Canada continue to come from legal sources, according to Health Canada’s annual cannabis survey. The amount commonly spent per month on cannabis decreased from $73 in 2018 to $63 in 2024 but was unchanged from 2023. The 2024 Canadian Cannabis Survey highlights ongoing trends among cannabis consumers in the country, documenting not only sources of cannabis but also topics such as consumption habits and perceptions of cannabis risks.  Smoking cannabis remains the most common way Canadians consume the product, but the proportion who report smoking cannabis has declined by twenty percentage points since legalization began. In 2018, 89% of cannabis consumers reported smoking cannabis, a number that has declined to 69% in the last two years of the federal government’s annual Canadian Cannabis Survey. Eating cannabis products was the second most common mode of consumption (57%, up from 43% in 2018) according to data collected from April 4 to July 2, 2024, while vaporizing (including vaping dried cannabis and/or liquid or solid cannabis extracts) accounted for 37% of reported consumption.

The CLHIA's position that patients can "pay out of pocket" if their pharmacy isn't covered shows a real disconnect from the realities many face. Forcing patients to choose between affordability and staying with their trusted pharmacy is not a solution. Ontario needs to protect patient choice and ensure access to care for everyone, without adding financial strain.
