So back in 2017, quite literally on a dare, a team of 6 people decided to run FWD50 in Ottawa. I did NOT have "be a free library of hundreds of public sector innovation talks" on my Bingo card. But here we are. Since 2020, we've also been recording, captioning, and publishing our talks. In 2023, our best-attended workshop happened online—with over 850 participants. I signed up for CBC Gem for the Olympics. Up until today, I hadn't noticed any emails from them (I must have just deleted them). Today I did notice them in my inbox, though. And I got angry. Because I didn't sign up for promo emails. I went to open it up to unsubscribe — but I noticed the preheader. Email 3 of 4 about my account benefits? Okay CBC! I don't really care about my account benefits at all, but the fact that you're telling me how many more emails to expect actually stopped me from unsubscribing (for now). Kudos to your email strategist ✨ Respecting your reader's inbox and setting expectations goes a LONG way. #emailmarketing

We don’t talk enough in Canada about the importance of literacy and adult education for accomplishing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.   SDG4 calls on us to “ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.” Providing wide access to education is crucial for building healthy and sustainable communities.   As governments and academic institutions increasingly engage with the SDGs as a framework for planning, we must ensure that literacy and adult education assume their rightful place in the dialogue.

Hi network! If you're a woman in Canada's non-profit sector please take a few minutes to complete this survey. When I read Imagine Canada's Diversity is our Strength report (https://lnkd.in/gtYsGaEt) words were put to the pain that I have been feeling for years as a non-profit employee that has now carried over to my work as a consultant: - Being told that "honey it's over- stop thinking like that" and "we have come so far in my 30 years of experience" when asked in a workshop to share with a White woman what was holding me back at work and I said "being taken seriously as a young-looking Asian woman" - Being told that "I should be muzzled" by a White woman because I was talking on the phone in my cubicle (which was a significant part of my job in an organization where meeting rooms were in short supply) and having no one tell that colleague how inappropriate she was being - Learning that my White male predecessor made significantly more $$ than I did - Seeing a White woman demean my Black colleague at a conference - Hearing that the same White woman demeaned another Black colleague on a call with 30 people in attendance but NO ONE SPOKE UP - Learning that my colleague's flexible working arrangement was being questioned - Using my personal time for my own and friends' self-advocacy in the non-profit workplace - Seeing too many other women of colour hit the middle management ceiling - Hearing advice that I should just ask leaders to have a cup of coffee with me so they can learn about my work/ needs from a White man who doesn't understand how much more likely he is to get coffee date than I am - Being so exhausted and hearing the exhaustion from my fellow women of colour in this sector - Being afraid to speak up (well now it's all out there) p.s. I do a workshop on self-advocacy for leaders of volunteers, half of which focuses on the underlying issues in our sector **ahem scarcity mindset, donor-centric fundraising, urgency culture** Allies and fellow marginalized folks in the sector- I see you. I appreciate you.

Entering the industry as a junior I did not know what was reasonable or not, and often got the short end of the stick because of it. This series of articles centres around practical lessons that I’ve learnt in my career as a designer, and will hopefully empower you to know when and how to stand up for yourself.”

Building off my last post, which resonated with several of my friends and followers, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into how you could prioritize stakeholder engagement during an organizational crisis - like an Ontario hospital being under provincial supervision: Impact: Who’s affected the most? Frontline staff, doctors and patients usually feel the changes first, so they need clear, honest updates to help them adjust and keep trust levels high. Influence: Certain groups, like government bodies and the board, have a big say in how things move forward. Regular communication is key here—they need to be in the loop. Urgency: Some partners and external groups—like referring doctors or local health teams—rely on the hospital’s services daily. Reaching out to them early helps prevent service disruptions. Don’t forget how important it is to keep enablers (donors and volunteers) updated, too. Reputation Risk: Perception is everything in a crisis. Proactive media engagement and managing public sentiment through community updates can help safeguard your organization’s reputation. Two-Way Communication: Listening is just as important as sharing information. Giving staff and community groups a voice helps you stay connected to what really matters on the ground. Crisis comms is all about knowing your audience and addressing their unique needs. Get this right and you’re well positioned to be on the road to recovery.
