"A very real danger when people are deprived of safe spaces to use drugs, is a higher risk of children coming into contact with drug paraphernalia left in playgrounds, streets and school grounds...Closing safer use spaces will not stop people from using drugs. It will increase danger. It will cost lives." YWCA Hamilton CEO Medora Uppal shares with the The Hamilton Spectator how our Safer Use Space demonstrably saves lives and is a critical public health resource in our community. Today is National Day of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-spirit LGBTQIA+ People. This year marks the 5th anniversary of the final report from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. The National Inquiry contained Calls for Justice that appeal to federal, provincial and territorial governments, as well as community groups and non-profits to address factors contributing to the violence perpetrated against Indigenous women and girls. On this day of action, we call on the Federal, Provincial and territorial government to do more to stop the violence and acknowledge that we need to do more, faster. We encourage community members to learn more about the National Inquiry’s final report and read the interactive report card published by CBC. This and other resources are linked in our bio. Please also consider attending this year’s “Beyond the Red Dress” event from 10am-12pm. https://lnkd.in/gbFHb3ZJ https://lnkd.in/gWpxWUM4
