The southern entrance to Great Bitter Lake is located 40 kilometers north of the Indian Ocean gateway to the Suez Canal. The lake is one of two sections of the canal wide enough for ships to pass one another. The canal expands from its regular dredged width of 205 meters to over 11 kilometers at the widest section of the lake. Numerous surface and pivot irrigated agricultural fields (green in true color, red in false color) border the banks of the lake and the remainder of the Suez Canal, north to the Atlantic Ocean. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

Center Pivot irrigation is the primary agricultural method for growing crops in the Algerian Sahara desert. Drawing water from the Sub-Saharan aquifer, crops are planted, irrigated and harvested throughout the year. Potatoes, for example, are commonly grown throughout the region and are harvested in the month of August. When the crops are ready to harvest, the cells within the leaves above the soil stop dividing. This natural process, referred to as senescence, can be detected from space using red-edge spectral bands. Using a plant senescence reflectance index, crops ready to harvest are highlighted in dark green. Plants still in a growth stage are indicated in light green/yellow. Areas in orange indicate desert sand, where no crops are growing. The high resolution of Dragonette-001 also uncovers the faint outline of adjacent center pivots where crops have already been harvested, and are in the process of being seeded for the next growing season. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

Iraq is in the middle of an extensive water crisis. Over the past 5 years, Iraq has experienced significant declines in surface water availability as a result of increased evaporation and diminishing water supply from rivers upstream. The image on the left of the Haditha Dam Lake was taken in 2019 by the Sentinel-2 satellite mission, showing the relative abundance of water compared to Wyvern’s Dragonette image to the right. The lakebed visible in the Dragonette image is an indication of significant water reduction. According to the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), Iraq’s water availability is projected to continue decreasing into 2025 - meaning water reservoir levels in the Haditha may fall even lower. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat

Historically, the wood-boring mountain pine beetle has lived to the west of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, relying on a wide range of pine trees for food and shelter. Warmer seasonal temperatures have expanded it's favorable living range, allowing pine beetles to cross the Rockies and protrude into Alberta. Since the early 2000’s, over 2.4 million hectares of Alberta forest have been affected by mountain pine beetle. Another 5.5 million hectares of pine forests are at risk of being harmed. Luckily, a cold snap in the early months of 2024 induced a high mortality rate amongst pine beetles throughout Alberta. While this has provided relief, localized outbreaks of pine beetle infestation can still occur, resulting in pine forest damage and loss. To detect possible locations of pine beetle damage, Wyvern used spectral bands from the Dragonette-001 satellite to generate a plant carotenoid concentration map. Carotenoids are organic pigments produced by plants that are present in high concentrations when plants are stressed. Forest areas illustrated in yellow below have a high relative concentration of carotenoids. Determining relative carotenoid concentrations using a scalable, space-based solution can play a key role in measuring vegetative stress across a large geographical area. For more on monitoring vegetation at scale, contact the Wyvern team for sample datasets. #wyvern #hyperspectral #satelliteimagery #spacetechnology #smallsat
