As I prepare for a trip to the northernmost community on Canada's mainland to run the Science Experiential Aerial Research (#SEAR) Program #ArcticSpecies Project, I am reviewing imagery from previous data collection activities in northern Canada... In 2021 I had the opportunity to visit Churchill, Manitoba to collect aerial #research data of migrating beluga whale populations in the Churchill River Estuary, just off Cape Merry. Volatus Aerospace collected over a terabyte of data over a 5-day period. Now, as I look over it, I am finding it entirely captivating looking at these animals... you be the judge (see sample images below)! The #SEAR Program introduces students to #drone and #machinelearning #technologies by engaging them in real-world research and data collection activities. There are many versions of the program that we've run across Canada and the United States, including the #DuthElmDisease, #CropDisease, and #LitterDetection Projects. Each projects specializes in research centered around a relevant community sustainability issue. In the case of the Arctic Species project, we will be working with community members to teach them how to collect aerial data of arctic species and habitats, including beluga whale migrating zones. I was very lucky in 2023 to have the opportunity to visit #Inuvik and #Paulatuk, #NorthwestTerritories to run our #educational programming. These communities are often limited in learning opportunities like this, and thus I am grateful for this opportunity! Hopefully the weather holds out!
