Dr. Tenley Conway is Professor and Associate Chair, Research, at University of Toronto Mississauga. She is also Environment Programs Director at the Department of Geography, Geomatics and Environment. Dr. Conway’s research integrates insights from environmental geography, environmental studies, and urban ecology to improve our understanding of urban forest governance, including key actors, rules and discourses, and use of geospatial techniques to examine patterns of trees and other urban land covers. As a Keynote Speaker at the 2024 Canadian Urban Forest Conference, Dr. Conway will draw on her research exploring residents’ knowledge, perceptions, and actions related to trees on their property and in their neighbourhoods. This includes recent studies focusing on the perceptions people hold about urban forests and how these perceptions vary by geographic and cultural identity across Canada. Mythes et faits : Mois de l’inspection des arbres – Numéro sur les organismes nuisibles envahissants 🌳 Mythe : L’agrile du frêne ne constitue pas une menace pour les arbres à l’extérieur des zones urbaines. ✔️ Fait : Les infestations d’agrile du frêne peuvent toucher les zones urbaines et boisées, et mettre en danger des millions de frênes partout au Canada. ❄️Mythe : Le puceron lanigère de la pruche ne survit pas dans les climats froids. ✔️ Fait : Le puceron lanigère de la pruche s’est adapté aux climats froids et constitue une grave menace pour les forêts de pruches au Canada. 🦋 Mythe : Les éclosions de spongieuse sont de courte durée et ne nécessitent aucune intervention. ✔️ Fait : Les éclosions de spongieuse peuvent durer plusieurs années. Les spongieuses peuvent manger tellement de feuilles que les arbres s’affaiblissent et peuvent même mourir. 🐛 Mythe : Il est facile de se débarrasser de la pyrale du buis. ✔️ Fait : Les pyrales du buis peuvent être persistantes et difficiles à contrôler une fois établies. Myths vs facts: Tree Check Month - Invasive Pests Edition 🌳 Myth: Emerald ash borer doesn't pose a threat to trees outside urban areas. ✔️ Fact: Emerald ash borer infestations can affect urban and forested areas, endangering millions of ash trees across Canada. ❄️ Myth: Hemlock woolly adelgid doesn't survive in cold climates. ✔️ Fact: Hemlock woolly adelgid has adapted to cold climates and poses a serious threat to hemlock forests in Canada. 🦋 Myth: Spongy moth outbreaks are short-lived and don't require action. ✔️ Fact: Spongy moth outbreaks can last several years. The moths can eat so many leaves that trees weaken and sometimes die. 🐛 Myth: It’s easy to get rid of box tree moths. ✔️ Fact: Box tree moths can be persistent and challenging to control once established. It’s important to detect them early and take action quickly to prevent extensive damage to ornamental plants and hedges. 🥕 Myth: Japanese beetle is only a problem for gardeners and landscapers. ✔️ Fact: Japanese beetles eat a wide range of plants, including roses, linden and birch trees, and agricultural crops such as peach, apple, apricot, cherry and plum trees.
