I wanted to express my sincerest thank you to all those who came together yesterday for an amazing Falling Walls LAB Manitoba 2024 event! I am deeply proud of our 12 presenters, who worked hard over the last 2 months to scrub their slide decks and polish their pitches to perfection! Bravo to all of you. Nolan De Leon (1st place), Megan Crooks (2nd place), Anastasia Matsko (Tas) (3rd place), Sajad Saraygord Afshari, PhD, P.Eng (Audience Choice Award), Mahdi Zakeri, Abhinav Tiwari, Juanita Garcia, Venkata Daggupati, Hussein Agoushi, Samantha Phrakonkham, Amir Barzegar Behrooz, Carmine Slipski PhD. Falling Walls Lab is much more than a pitch competition; it represents a convergence of innovators, trailblazers, and visionaries, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and showcasing groundbreaking ideas that tackle the pressing challenges of our time. By aligning with our event, your organizations not only gained exposure to a diverse and dynamic pool of students and early-career professionals but also demonstrate a commitment to nurturing innovation and driving positive change. Each year, Falling Walls Labs around the world provide platforms for the brightest minds in their respective regions to present their solutions in succinct three-minute pitches. These presentations are evaluated by esteemed experts from academia and industry, culminating in the selection of a regional winner who advances to the global finale in Berlin on 7 November. This global stage offers unparalleled opportunities for networking, collaboration, and recognition, as participants vie for the coveted title of Breakthrough Winner in the Emerging Talents category of Falling Walls. Thank you to our partners and sponsors for their generous contributions both in sweat equity and financial support. As an organisation dedicated to fostering innovation and supporting emerging talent, your partnership with Falling Walls Lab Manitoba allowed our PKMI staff to offer an exceptional platform to showcase your commitment to innovation while engaging directly with our vibrant community. What do you need to build a prototype? Or an MVP (Minimum Viable Product). I knew it had to be usable for sighted, visually impaired, and blind people. A comic book is made up of pages with panels; in each panel, there are word balloons and text inside the word balloons. My first attempt displayed the pages in a carousel, but I quickly discovered that carousels are terrible for accessibility. Next, I decided to display the pages on a scrolling page, as this is the natural way people read content on a website. But how do you display the images so they are accessible? Easy, with semantic HTML. And the difference between Mobile and desktop? Desktop shows what a physical comic looks like. Mobile has the word balloons removed (Eventually, in my prototype, I couldn’t as I don’t have the source files and my photo manipulating ability is non-existent), with the text below the images, so it reads more like a prose novel. I took the liberty of using the first three pages of Amazing Spider-Man number 1 to show a proof of concept. Introducing www.Accomible.com
