Boundary Bay just got a little bit cleaner! Volunteers from Nature Force worked alongside staff from Ducks Unlimited Canada this April to collect over 230kgs of garbage in an afternoon in the Lower Mainland – the weight of an adolescent grizzly bear! Everything was disposed of properly at a local dump afterward. Learn more about Nature Force here: https://loom.ly/cZ0v46Q #TheNatureForce #BritishColumbia #Conservation

The B.C. Fraser River estuary is home to hundreds of millions of out-migrating juvenile salmon who rely upon these brackish ecosystems as they transition to the ocean. Over the past four decades, the Sturgeon Bank tidal marsh has undergone a drastic reduction in area, losing approximately 30 per cent of its original expanse, and this decline raises significant concerns about the future health of the marsh. The Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project is an innovative and customized approach to addressing large-scale tidal marsh loss. Led by Ducks Unlimited Canada, this project leverages new techniques to replenish the marsh’s receding sediment: since 2023, over 15,000 cubic meters—enough to fill six Olympic swimming pools—of sediment has been deposited on the foreshore of Sturgeon Bank - all of it repurposed from local dredging of the Fraser River and a local marina and transported by a 1+km-long temporary pipeline. By strategically depositing material dredged from the Fraser River, the project seeks to simulate natural sedimentation processes, fostering the regeneration of the marsh ecosystem. This Nature Force pilot project is possible with funding from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Province of British Columbia, with further support from Tsawwassen First Nation, Raincoast Conservation Foundation, Lower Fraser Fisheries Alliance, Pacific Salmon Foundation, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and The Nature Force. https://loom.ly/zoLeRb0 #TheNatureForce #ClimateResilience

Wetland restoration in action! In March, 215 plants of 16 species were planted at Forslund-Watson Wildlife Area in Langley by volunteers from the Nature Force alongside Nature Trust BC, Langley Environmental Partners Society, the Langley Field Naturalists, and @Ducks Unlimited Canada staff. These plants are part of a larger effort to support local wetland restoration and biodiversity. #TheNatureForce #WetlandRestoration #NatureBasedSolutions #BritishColumbia

Wetlands provide many benefits, like protecting our communities from extreme weather, keeping the water at our local lakes and beaches clean, and providing shelter for hundreds of wildlife species—just to name a few! Which is why on June 22-23, people across the country will be participating in Duck and Run—the race to conserve and restore our wetlands. If you want to join in on the fun, run to ➡️ ducks.ca/run to register for a 5K or 1K fun run near you, or take on the 10,000-step virtual challenge! The 2024 Duck and Run is proudly sponsored by Bass Pro Shops and Cabela's Canada. #DucksUnlimitedCanada #DUCDuckAndRun #WetlandConservation #ClimateAction #HabitatRestoration #NatureBasedSolutions

A second year of work has wrapped up for the Sturgeon Bank Sediment Enhancement Pilot Project in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia—an ambitious endeavor aimed at reclaiming lost ground and restoring the marsh to its former footprint in an innovative and sustainable way while, among other goals, combating sea-level rise and coastal biodiversity loss. The benefits of marsh restoration extend far beyond ecological renewal, and includes coastal flood protection. A healthy marsh serves as a natural buffer against coastal erosion and flooding, safeguarding nearby communities and infrastructure. By enhancing the resilience of the marsh ecosystem, the project contributes to the overall resilience of coastal areas. #TheNatureForce #NatureBasedSolutions #FloodMitigation #CoastalFloodProtection #SeaLevelRise #CoastalErosion #ClimateResilience

Fifth-generation farmer Randy Gofton stands proudly beside the newly installed DUC sign on his property in Oxford County where DUC created three wetlands to provide habitat for a variety of waterfowl and other wildlife, capture run-off, and feed cleaner water into Washington Creek. This conservation project was made possible by @the_nature_force partnership between DUC and 16 insurance companies across Canada investing in nature-based solutions to mitigate flood risks to communities. DUC is also grateful for the generous support from @environmentca (ECCC) through Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, the @USFWS North American Wetlands Conservation Act, (NAWCA), and the @USFWS as well as numerous U.S. state agencies through the Fall Flights Initiative. https://loom.ly/w-rSTUI #wetlands #conservation #partnerships

"In the face of drought, we need to marshal our most effective engineered and ecological solutions. Pragmatic actions, such as multi-sector drought planning and water conservation, are essential. But we also need to improve our ability to save water on the landscape through smart investments in water recharge and natural storage. Natural reservoirs should be identified, preserved and accounted for in decision making." In a recent opinion piece published in the Calgary Herald, Josée Méthot of the International Institute for Sustainable Development highlights the important role of natural infrastructure like wetlands in mitigating the effects of drought—a critical issue for Albertans as parts of the province face some of the worst drought conditions on record. #naturalinfrastructure #climateresilience #drought #watersecurity #conservation #thenatureforce
