Overdose is not just a statistic. It is a deeply personal and painful reality for countless people. As we observe this day, we must confront the stigma surrounding substance use disorder, which often prevents individuals from seeking the help they need. We advocate for harm reduction measures, which have proven to save lives, and push for more accessible treatment and support services. Today, we stand with survivors, families, and communities affected by overdose. We remember those who are no longer with us and renew our commitment to creating a society where no one has to face the fear of losing a loved one to overdose. This day is not only about mourning. At our latest “A SAFE Place” session, our survivor-led support group with Achēv, we felt the deep connection that comes from building a strong community. One of the attendees brought roses and gave one to each of us in the room, including the facilitator and counsellor. It was her way of showing how much the support and sense of belonging in this group mean to her. Moments like these remind us of the real impact survivor-led spaces can have. We’re grateful to provide a place where survivors of gender-based violence can come together, find strength, and know they’re not alone. This is what keeps us going.
