Our employees knocked it out of the park helping raise more than $55,000 for the United Way Fort McMurray and Wood Buffalo! Twenty-one teams came together last weekend for the eight anniversary of the Grand Slam Slo-pitch tournament held at Syncrude Athletic Park in Fort McMurray, providing much-needed funds to organizations that help those in need across the region. The employee-organized event was also supported by our SunCares program, which amplifies employee contributions to communities through volunteering and matching. Diana Wammes, a long-time employee at our Sarnia refinery, will be cheering extra loud during the 2024 Summer Games in Paris as her nephew, Nick, prepares for his second Olympic competition. Petro-Canada, a Suncor business, recently renewed its partnership with both the Canadian Olympic Committee and the Canadian Paralympic Committee for eight more years. Diana believes Petro-Canada’s support gives Canadian athletes like Nick a chance to succeed. More than 50 of our employees showed off their western spirit as they walked and danced in this year’s Calgary Stampede Parade. To kick off The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, Suncor, presenter of the Parade, led with the opening floats on July 5. The parade saw a record number of approximately 350,000 in the crowd. We're marking a significant advancement in our mining operations as 35 Autonomous Haulage Systems (AHS) trucks recently rolled out at our Base Plant Millennium Mine. AHS trucks operate using GPS, wireless communication and perceptive technologies, offering many advantages to operational performance including improving safety, reliability and efficiency, while driving a more competitive cost per barrel. Pipe ceremonies are sacred events in Indigenous cultures, used to open and solidify relationships between nations, compel truth and respect by those taking part, and are often used when making decisions and agreements. Last year, Ilyanna Janvier and our General Counsel & Corporate Secretary Jacquie Moore transferred into their roles as co-pipe carriers with the Indigenous Youth Advisory Council (IYAC) through a pipe ceremony. IYAC was established in 2019 to give us the opportunity to hear directly from Indigenous youth in the communities where we operate. The council has influenced change including water protection and reduced plastic water bottle use at some of our sites and the installation of a smudge room in our Calgary headquarters. That’s why Suncor was back again this year as a sponsor of The Art of Leadership for Women - Calgary, a conference designed to teach new ways of thinking and provide connections to help women advance in their careers. At Suncor, we're intentional about creating opportunities for female leaders and recognize the value that brings to our organization. Dozens of Suncor employees were in attendance, with many from our Women Engage Network. Vicky Li, Suncor’s VP HR, Business Partners and HR Advisory, had the pleasure of introducing Roberta Bondar, an acclaimed Canadian astronaut and neurologist who inspires us to aim for the stars, while Kimberley Mullins, our VP HR, Talent, Learning and Culture, took to the stage as part of the Executive Panel. Kimberley spoke about her own career path and told the crowd to “run your own race where you can uniquely shine.”
