Have you heard of the September Spike? Every fall, around the third week of September, there is a spike in the number of emergency room visits and hospitalizations for children with asthma. If your child has asthma, there are a few things you can do to avoid the September Spike: ☑ Make sure medications like inhalers are used as prescribed. ☑ Avoid exposures to known allergens as much as possible. ☑ Reduce your child’s risk of getting a respiratory infection through proper handwashing, avoiding people who are sick, and keeping up to date with vaccines. For more information, talk to your family doctor or health team about developing an asthma action plan for your child. #Asthma #BackToSchool #ABHealth #PrimaryCare

Overdose and the opioid crisis are ongoing public health issues in our country, particularly in Western Canada. Even if you only use recreationally, you are still at risk. #HarmReduction is crucial for overdose prevention: 🟥 Get your drugs tested to ensure safe composition. AAWEAR (Alberta Alliance Who Educate and Advocate Responsibly) provides mobile drug checking in Alberta's major cities. 🟥 Don't use drugs alone. 🟥 Carry #Nalaxone with you. If someone is showing signs of an overdose such as unresponsiveness, blue lips and nails, slowed or halted breathing, or cold, clammy skin, call 911 and administer Nalaxone. The Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act protects anyone seeking emergency support during the event of an overdose, including the effected individual. If you are looking for addiction support, talk to your doctor. #ABHealth #PCN
