A huge congratulations to Shane O'Connor 🥳 A few words from Shane: "I am currently pursuing an Occupational Health and Safety Diploma with the University of Calgary, with an expected graduation in the summer of 2025. Alongside my studies, I work full-time as the Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator for the Holy Family Catholic Regional Division in Peace River. I am blessed with a loving wife, three young children, and we are excited to welcome our fourth child in October. "This scholarship will support my continued academic journey, as I aim to earn both a professional business diploma and the Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation. My goal is to apply my education and experience to enhance safety standards, benefiting not only my division but also the broader community and region." 🎓 Now in its fifth year, the Carol Ross Scholarship continues to support exceptional students like Shane who are passionate about pursuing a career in Occupational Health and Safety through post-secondary studies. Today, on World Suicide Prevention Day, I’m thinking about the mental health crisis and alarming suicide rates in industries like construction, agriculture, and frontline responders. These are industries that AuditSoft serves and cares about deeply. 🚧 Construction -65% higher suicide rate than other sectors. -83% of Canadian construction workers have experienced a moderate to severe mental health issue. -1 in 13 opioid-related deaths in Ontario (2018-2020) involved construction workers. 🚜 Agriculture   -36.1 suicides per 100,000 workers in the US. -76% of Canadian farmers experience moderate to high stress. -Rural isolation and lack of mental health services intensify the crisis. 🚑 First Responders and Nurses   -25.3 suicides per 100,000 workers in the US. -37% of Canadian nurses reported poor mental health during the pandemic (2020). -PTSD claims from Alberta first responders cost over $55M between 2014-2018. If you’re an OHS Student, check this out!! I found out about this opportunity at around the same time last year. I wrote an essay about why I decided to pursue a career in Safety. I did not expect to hear anything back, but I was graciously selected for this scholarship. Beyond the $3000, the learning resources are super useful. The AASP provides you with access to a ton of courses. When I graduated in May, I felt a lot more confident and had a bunch of great training to my name. Carol, The AASP, SafetyVantage and everyone involved with the process were incredible. When I visited the AASP conference last fall, I was super impressed by the warm welcome I received. (They let you keep the giant cheque too) If you decide to apply - write from the heart, and write based on your personal experience! Be yourself. When the AASP announces the winner this fall, I hope to see one of your names as the recipient!
