Parachute reposted this
Amberly McAteer's recent article reveals the challenge that I and many colleagues in Canada have been working to address. Children need to engage in outdoor play that exposes them to some risks (not hazards!) that promote first and foremost - fun, but also the development of physical and cognitive skills as well as social skills that come from having control over their play, making decisions, assessing their own capabilities, and developing relationships with others. You'd think an injury prevention organization would not support risk, but there is a difference between a risk and a hazard, and they aren't static. Risks and hazards change over the time a child develops. What might be a hazard for a 2-year old, is a risk for a 6-year old. The recent Canadian Paediatric Society's statement on risky play that Mariana Brussoni, Suzanne Beno, Emilie Beaulieu and I were involved with supports the idea of unstructured, child-led play. Listen to Parachute's #PoppingTheBubbleWrap June 11th podcast episode to hear more about what risk play is and how to promote it https://lnkd.in/g5AKXU9s
Opinion: Swing, slide, yawn: Why are our playgrounds so boring?
