The Métis National Council is committed to preserving the legacy of Métis Veterans and ensuring their achievements and sacrifices are honoured and acknowledged across the Métis Nation and the Homeland. The Métis Veterans Legacy Program (MLVP) is a tribute to the brave Métis citizens who served in World War II and ensures their sacrifices are honoured. The MLVP was born out of a commitment to acknowledge the invaluable contributions of Métis Nation Veterans and goes beyond remembrance by providing our Veterans with present-day financial support in the form of a one-time recognition payment of $20,000 for qualified Second World War Métis Veterans. Our Métis Nation Veterans did not receive the same respect, resources, and benefits that non-Métis Veterans received upon returning home from WWII. These broken promises resulted in economic and emotional consequences for Métis Nation Veterans and their families – the MVLP’s mission is to rectify this situation by giving our Métis Nation Veterans and their families the rightful recognition they deserve. Statement of Condolence on the Passing of The Honourable Murray Sinclair: The Métis Nation is profoundly saddened by the passing of Murray Sinclair, an esteemed Anishinaabe leader from Peguis First Nation, former senator, and head of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Murray Sinclair’s unwavering commitment to truth and resilience for Indigenous Peoples, including the Métis Nation, leaves a profound and lasting legacy. As a renowned Manitoba lawyer who led the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Murray Sinclair's leadership helped bring the painful realities of residential school Survivors to the forefront of Canada’s consciousness, urging all Canadians to acknowledge and address these truths. Under Sinclair's leadership, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's (TRC) report, and its 94 Calls to Action within, has enshrined the voices of Survivors in our nation’s history, standing as a testament to their experiences and resilience. Today, the TRC report guides us toward a more just and equitable future, made possible through Murray Sinclair’s invaluable leadership and vision. As we remember him, we honour his relentless work for truth, justice, and equality, which has paved the way for a brighter future for Métis and all Indigenous Peoples. His impact will continue to inspire our work towards reconciliation and healing for generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and everyone touched by his extraordinary life. Over the last few years, the Métis National Council (MNC) has been re-built into a transparent, accountable, and ethical organization. One that continues to support the evolving needs of our Métis Governments and Métis people into the future. As was made clear by Governing Members to the MNC, this reform of the organization and the MNC’s bylaws continues to be a priority. Despite this collective work and the numerous reforms to better serve the Métis Nation, more time and more discussion are needed between and amongst our Métis governments. While these conversations continue, the Annual General Assembly and the election of a new President has been delayed allowing for more space to have those important dialogues. The need for a strong national voice, collaborative engagement, and respectful dialogue between all Métis has not and will not change. The MNC remains committed to our ancestors' vision to work respectfully with one another to build a bright future that all Métis people deserve.

On October 22nd, representatives from the Métis National Council participated in the second annual National Climate Adaptation Summit in Ottawa, alongside federal cabinet ministers, Indigenous leaders, community members, and key stakeholders from across Canada. As climate impacts intensify, we stand united with Climate Proof Canada and its 2024 recommendations for building resilient communities, calling for critical federal investment in the National Adaptation Strategy to safeguard our communities against increasing threats like wildfires, floods, and extreme heat. The MNC also continues to advocate for sustainable funding through the Indigenous Climate Leadership Agenda which will allow for a distinctions-based, long-term, and whole-of-government approach to partnership on climate. Together, we remain committed to building resilience and ensuring a sustainable future for all Métis citizens. #NationalClimateAdaptationSummit #MNC #MétisNationalCouncil #MétisEnvironment #ClimateChange #IndigenousClimateLedershipAgenda

Today, on October 24, 2024, we join the international community in celebrating United Nations Day, making the anniversary of the UN Charter coming into force in 1945. This day is a reminder of our shared commitment to peace, dignity, and equality for all. Today also acts as a reminder of the centuries-long fight for Indigenous Peoples to claim their spot within the international system. In July of 1923, Haudenosaunee Hereditary Chief, Deskaheh, travelled to Geneva, Switzerland to speak before the League of Nations to obtain international recognition of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy as a sovereign Indigenous Nation. The League of Nations refused to hear his petition, and the recognition of Indigenous Peoples right to self-determination continues to be an uphill battle. When the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) was adopted in 2007, it was guided by the principles of the UN Charter, reiterating that “Indigenous Peoples are equal to all other peoples.” The Métis National Council continues to advocate for the protection and promotion of the rights outlined in UNDRIP both within Canada, and internationally. Additionally, MNC remains dedicated to the fight for Enhanced Participation of Indigenous Peoples within the United Nations, and continues to actively participate in dialogues to secure the Métis Nation a spot at the table. This year's theme was "Enhancing Indigenous Peoples’ right to self-determination in the context of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: emphasizing the voices of Indigenous youth.” #UnitedNationsDay #MétisNationalCouncil #UNDRIP #IndigenousRights #UNDA
