In 2021, we collaborated with the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba, the Government of Manitoba, and health system employers to bring the undergraduate nurse employee (UNE) role to Manitoba. The UNE role provides opportunities for students and internationally educated nurses to work while completing coursework and benefits the health system. Since its implementation, it has provided a small but important contribution to addressing health human resource (HHR) challenges in Manitoba. We will continue to look for more opportunities to work constructively with our partners as we move forward with our strategic plan and our HHR strategic imperative. Read more on how the role has grown here. #healthcare #nursing #registerednursing #manitoba #professionalregulation #nursingstudents #IEN

About us
Vision: Leadership and innovation in registered nursing regulation. Mission: To protect the public through quality registered nursing regulation. We establish and maintain a registration process that ensures those who practice as registered nurses or graduate nurses are qualified and competent. We set and maintain nursing practice standards that registered nurses must meet every day to ensure safe, competent and ethical registered nursing care. We approve nursing education programs to ensure students get the education they need to perform the competencies of a registered nurse. We receive and investigate complaints about the nursing practice and conduct of registered nurses and determine appropriate remedial or disciplinary actions as required. The College has been the professional regulatory body for registered nurses in Manitoba since 1913. The Registered Nurses Act and Regulations set out our responsibilities.

It was a privilege to be invited to join a panel discussion with fellow regulators the College of Nurses of Ontario and the BC College of Nurses and Midwives at the Nurse Practitioner Association of Canada 2024 conference. Deb Elias, our CEO/Registrar appreciated the opportunity engage with NPs from across the country, and to speak to our role in supporting NP practice and patient safety here in Manitoba. #npac2024 #aiipc2024 #NPs #NursePractitioners #nursing
This past weekend, CNO was honoured to join a panel discussion at the Nurse Practitioner Association of Canada’s 2024 conference. College of Nurses of Ontario’s own Registrar/Executive Director and CEO, Silvie Crawford, joined Cynthia Johansen (She/Her), Registrar & Chief Executive Officer of the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives and Deb Elias, Chief Executive Officer/Registrar of the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba on the panel. The discussion ranged from how we engage NPs, professional associations, labour unions and employers in our regulatory work; opportunities for national regulation of the profession; and how NP scope of practice has evolved in each of our jurisdictions. It was a terrific opportunity to engage with NPs and demonstrate how CNO is an effective and trusted organization whose purpose is to protect the public by promoting safe nursing practice. #npmomentum #ipdynamisme #npac2024 #aiipc2024 #NPs #NursePractitioners #nursing

Our strategic plan for 2024-2028 is moving the College into a new era with a more proactive, approachable and engaged outlook. The plan was informed by extensive consultation with stakeholders and members of the public. As we move to implementation, our organizational focus will stay zeroed in on our core regulatory mandate as we adapt to a changing operating environment and work to expand the importance and impact of registered nurses in the modernization of Manitoba healthcare. We look forward to sharing more as we make progress on our objectives.
