This coming Monday, September 30th, we encourage everyone to reflect on the history and lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous communities across Canada. Wearing an orange shirt as we did as a team today collectively honours and symbolize our commitment to remembering the children who were taken from their families and placed in residential schools, It is a small way to demonstrate and show our support for survivors and their families. The significance of the orange shirt comes from the story of Phyllis Webstad, a residential school survivor. On her first day at a residential school, Phyllis wore a bright orange shirt that her grandmother had given her. Upon arrival, the shirt was taken away from her, symbolizing the many losses Indigenous children faced during this painful chapter of history. The orange shirt has since become a symbol of the stripping away of culture, freedom, and self-identity experienced by Indigenous children over generations. Wearing orange is one way to stand in solidarity with Indigenous Peoples and raise awareness of the need for healing and reconciliation.
