🌍 In March 2022, UN member states adopted UNEA Resolution 5/14 to tackle plastic pollution by 2024. This bold mandate aims to create an international agreement covering the full lifecycle of plastics, impacting global supply chains. 🌱 As countries strive to meet this deadline, new policies on plastic use, trade, and waste will reshape international trade and environmental strategies. 🌐⚖️ Policymakers face the challenge of balancing environmental goals with trade interests to pave the way for a sustainable future. 🌿 Explore the details of trade-related policy measures designed to combat plastic pollution in our latest report: https://lnkd.in/g-RcY_Ti

🌍 Border Carbon Adjustments will have a profound impact on global trade, especially for developing nations like Trinidad and Tobago and Brazil. Our country report series dives into the implications of #CBAM implementation. Trinidad and Tobago faces unique challenges for green transition, with fossil fuels-dominated economy, limited technology, and access to finance. Read more about their BCA challenges: https://lnkd.in/guUDmRG4 Brazilian exporters are concerned about administrative burdens and compliance costs under BCAs, especially if when more of such instruments are introduced: https://lnkd.in/gfJftKeS ✅ The situation of developing countries in the global decarbonization challenge calls for particular attention. We are bringing evidence on the table from our dialogues in Brazil and Trinidad and Tobago. #CBAM #BCAs #BorderCarbonAdjustments #EUCBAM Alice Tipping | Ieva Baršauskaitė | Antoine B. | Aaron Cosbey

🌍 The UK’s proposed Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is designed to address carbon leakage and support its climate action. However, it’s crucial to strike the right balance to make sure that this instrument does not become a protectionist tool instead. IISD has published Chatham House’s report that highlights the need for international collaboration to ensure that the CBAM supports the Paris Agreement goals while minimizing negative impacts on trade. It also calls for careful consideration of developing countries' capacities to adapt to these changes. "From a polluted Seine River grabbing the spotlight during this year’s Olympic Games to California’s shrinking lakes offending the olfactory senses of its citizens, it seems like this week’s World Water Week couldn’t come soon enough." Water-related disasters and pollution have affected more people globally than any other natural disaster in the past 40 years. From drought to flooding, extreme weather patterns are being exacerbated by climate change, often with severe risks that impact housing, agriculture, and many other aspects of our lives. Writing for EU Reporter, IISD's Dimple Roy makes the case for Nature-based Solutions. 🔎 https://lnkd.in/guv7fvhX

Join us for the fifth session of IUCN's NAbSA Dialogues series to learn how green infrastructure and #NatureBasedSolutions can help better prepare urban communities for the impacts of climate change. The event will explore the #SUNCASA project's experience in implementing #NbS in Dire Dawa (Ethiopia), Kigali (Rwanda), and Johannesburg (South Africa). Partners from the three cities will discuss the role #NbS can play in improving urban resilience by integrating green spaces and natural systems into city planning. Where do pledges to end international public finance for fossil fuels stand a year after the Clean Energy Transition Partnership deadline? In a new report, experts from IISD, Oil Change International and Friends of the Earth assessed #CETP progress finding members channeled $5.2 billion to overseas fossil fuel projects in 2023—a cut of up to two-thirds from the 2019-21 baseline. Yet, finance for clean energy continues to fall short, rising just 16% over the same period to $21.3 billion. Most of this went to rich countries, with Spain, Germany, and Poland the top three recipients. Of the finance to lower- and lower-middle-income countries, 83% was delivered as loans, adding to their debt burden. Meeting the CETP commitment in full would send an important political signal on clean energy ambitions. In their new report, experts outline 5 ways members can build on their progress ahead of COP 29 negotiations this fall. Read the full analysis: https://lnkd.in/gepg8fnG

In order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal 6-related goals for 2030, we’re going to need a six-fold increase in progress—and any progress we make needs to be inclusive. At World Water Week in Stockholm today, IISD’s President and CEO Patricia Fuller and Prof. Kaveh Madani, Director of The United Nations University Institute for Water, Environment and Health (UNU-INWEH), discussed the need for inclusion and the practices for how to promote inclusion can vary across the globe. During the session, the pair emphasized prioritizing inclusion at all stages of water protection and management—from public policy and investment to on-the-ground implementation—to ensure long-term water security in the regions we serve and around the world. In IISD’s efforts, we’ve seen positive social benefits as well as tangible environmental outcomes such as cleaner water, improved access and enhanced climate resilience. If you missed the talk show, it will be made available in the future from World Water Week, and shared here 👉 https://lnkd.in/gwgjDzcB
