(1/2) Climate Proof Canada’s second National Climate Adaptation Summit focused our energy on improving economic resilience and reducing risk across the country. 🇨🇦 must play offence and defence. 🏒🔥💦💨 Summit Day is two things: 1. Senior political roundtable meetings to drive policy impact; and 2. Convening a growing number of the foremost experts on climate adaptation from across the country. To drive policy impact and investment we met with Ministers, Deputy Ministers, a Shadow Minister, Parliamentary Secretaries and an Opposition Critic, along with multiple MPs, led by leaders that chaired our meetings and panels as well as all of those that shared their expertise to move the needle. Our sincerest appreciation to our speakers this morning at the #NationalAdaptationSummit who set the tone for the day by touching on the urgency of climate change and the need for Canada to prioritize adaptation. Mayor #Ireland of Jasper shared his perspectives on the profound and pervasive impact the recent wildfire had on his community, and his appreciation for the outpouring of support. Steven Guilbeault spoke of how climate adaptation should not be a debate and that all Canadians should be involved in the conversation on how to tackle this issue. Celyeste Power President & CEO of Insurance Bureau of Canada pointed out that this summer has been a wake-up call, reminding us that climate adaptation needs a whole of society effort. “Climate Change is not just an environmental, economic or safety issue. In the span of just five weeks this past summer, Canada saw five natural catastrophes: three major floods, a devastating wildfire, and a destructive hailstorm resulting in $7 billion of insured losses.   This isn’t an anomaly. It isn’t bad luck. It’s part of an escalating trend of severe weather events that is making Canada a riskier place to live, work and insure.   I know Canada is not facing these challenges alone and I join with my colleagues in Australia, New Zealand and Britain in our call for meaningful action to reduce the growing physical and financial risks our citizens are facing. #CDNPoli
