AI has received a lot of attention in the past few years, but I have seen few discussions about what it really takes to develop and deploy new AI products. I've been developing and deploying AI products for 20 years, and there are 2 fundamental concepts that are often overlooked when teams work on AI model development in healthcare: data collection and data flows strategies. 1: DATA > AI AI can only exist if data is available in digital form. A good data strategy should provide: - Clear objectives for the AI task to be developed. - KPIs for a cost function: how will you compare model performance? - Data collection: how to efficiently build datasets for the project? - Datasets to evaluate current cost and performance. - Datasets for AI training. - Datasets for AI validation and test. Don't underestimate the cost of this! Collecting data to build AI models can be orders of magnitude more expensive and time consuming that building the actual AI. This is the main reason why we've built the Hexoskin platform: to lower the cost of vital signs datasets for health research and medical AI. 2: AI DEPLOYMENT = AI DATA WORKFLOWS AI provides value only where there's a digital workflow in place, meaning: - Data needs to be collected as part of the normal workflow. - A data flow model exists where human tasks on that data can be replaced by AI/software automated processing. - Processes are in place to continuously measure the performance of the AI model. - Processes are in place to detect and document AI errors so they can be used in a future version of the AI model. These concepts are essential for any AI model deployed in healthcare, regardless of the task: diagnostics, prediction, note taking, billing, case management, etc. They should be part of both your business plan and your risk management strategy. AI only has value if you deploy it and it changes your operations to make them better. I was invited today by the National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada and the Taiwan Textile Research Institute to talk about medical wearables and AI. Our field has progressed so much over the past 10 years! Here are some takeaways: - Each month, millions of patients are adopting a new medical wearable. - New materials, batteries, and electronics are enabling better form factors. - Great software is essential to add value through data automation and UX. - Validation and clinical trials require a lot of ressources when developing medical wearables and artificial intelligence. - New instruments provide new types of data, which lead to new models for how we care for patients, and even sometimes change our definition of a disease. For over 15 years Hexoskin has been involved in the development of clinical wearables and medical AI. We've always known that progress on medical AI needed a better way to collect high quality physiological data, and its our focus on data that made Hexoskin an industry leader. This past Thursday, (June 6), Breakthrough One Fellows gathered for "Virtual Knowledge Convene"  featuring Guest speaker Pierre-Alexandre Fournier, CEO of Hexoskin.     Attendees included Rachel Tornheim, Dr. Carl Rosen, Neal Weinstock, Andrea Timberlake, Yanick N. Brice, Ph.D., M.P.A..     Pierre presented about his digital diagnostic vests, which in addition to being worn by Chris Hemsworth in the movie Limitless, are also being used by astronauts in space as well as to help diagnose certain disease.     Pierre spoke about the evolution of medical wearables and how they've been in existence for thousands of years ago (ie; prosthetic limbs, cochlear implants, et..)  as tools to help people to better manage their health.    The Hexoskin and Astroskin are two of Pierre's digital wearable devices. As they are being worn, they collect data from the body (key biomarkers).  They are changing the way we diagnose and manage disease. Getting ready for my parabolic flight! This summer, as a member of the Canadian Space Agency | Agence spatiale canadienne Health Beyond team, I'll have the great opportunity to test medical technologies in microgravity. To do this, I'll be boarding a Falcon-20 aircraft - a commercial jet with modified hydraulic and fuel systems - which will perform several parabolas between 8,000 and 12,000 m in altitude to recreate microgravity conditions. This is just a small part of the preparations as we make sure these experiments will be fruitful.
