The Canadian government is showing big support for carbon capture, including with a "'Clean Economy Investment Tax Credits" scheme announced in June 2024. But most of the CCS developments to date have been in the West - Alberta and Saskatchewan. How might the East catch up? Dick Jackson, fellow with Geofirma Engineering Ltd. discusses the potential geological CO2 storage reservoirs in Central and Eastern Canada in a webinar hosted by Carbon Capture Journal and Decarb Connect. A recording of the talk is available here: https://lnkd.in/ecAXj3Xw

Geofirma Engineering is hiring: Computational Modeler Geofirma Engineering Ltd. is looking for a computational modeler to join our team working on groundwater flow, contaminant transport, and geomechanics. You would be joining a team of experienced professionals who conduct leading-edge modelling for radioactive waste management, carbon sequestration, energy storage, and other significant subsurface activities. A deep knowledge of the scientific and mathematical basis of fluid flow and transport modelling is required, and the position requires substantial data analysis skills. The ideal candidate will have a doctorate degree from a recognized Canadian engineering or earth science university program. You should have an established track record in modelling subsurface flow processes including multiphase flow, chemical processes (e.g. dissolution), hydromechanical coupling, and chemical transport. You should have the potential to obtain a P.Eng. or P.Geo. license in Ontario. Experience developing numerical models is essential, and experience with the modeling codes HydroGeoSphere, TOUGH3, and/or FLAC3D would be an asset. Experience with software development is also of interest. Duties for the position include: - Building physics-based models of geological systems to describe subsurface flow of multiple fluid phases and geomechanical effects of pressure alteration in the subsurface. - Performing experiments on large geophysical databases to develop new relationships between geophysical log data and fundamental properties of subsurface flow systems. - Application of machine learning, including artificial neural networks, to optimization problems such as injection well placement and minimization of pipeline network length. - Develop programing scripts and software for extracting, cleaning, and organizing large and complex datasets. - Create high quality visualizations to communicate complex scientific and engineering concepts and model results to colleagues and clients. - Writing high quality client-facing reports or memos which translate complex scientific and engineering products and concepts to provide actionable information to clients. The successful candidate will be offered a permanent position, with the opportunity to assume increasing autonomy and responsibility and equity participation in Geofirma Engineering Ltd. Salary will be in accordance with PEO/APGO salary scales. Company benefits include medical/dental and Group RRSP. The position is based in Ottawa, Ontario and is not a remote position.

Geofirma Engineering Ltd. reposted this
I would like to congratulate Dr. Meyer, Dr. Parker and my other coauthors on a paper that was recently accepted in the Journal of Hydrology. The paper shows how complimentary rock core VOC, hydraulic testing, and hydraulic head data can be used to identify aquitards and assess their integrity. Findings from this paper show the limitations of conventional site characterization methods when identifying aquitards in fractured rocks, where there can be signicant anisotropy due to fracture network geometries.

Lauren has shared her recent publication that makes some great contributions to the development of a robust tectonic framework for understanding the architecture of basal sandstones all over North America, which are popular carbon sequestration and storage targets in Canada and the United States.
Congratulations to my coauthors on our recent publication in Terra Nova: Source-to-sink tandem geochronology reveals tectonic influences on the Cambrian Transcontinental Arch of Laurentia https://lnkd.in/geKwKEaz Many thanks to Dr. Mark Holland for leading the charge on this manuscript. And, special thanks to Drs. Karl Karlstrom and Laura Crossey for their hospitality and an opportunity to participate in one of their legendary river research trips rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon, where I was fortunate enough to collect some samples for which results are presented in this publication. Now that a bit more of my MSc work has been published, this is great reminder and motivator to get my Canadian Cambrian data published. I can’t wait to share more of my contributions to our understanding of Neoproterozoic through Cambrian tectonostratigraphy of Laurentia (aka ancestral North America). Developing a robust tectonic framework for this time in Earth’s history is critical to understanding the architecture of basal sandstones all over North America, which are popular carbon sequestration targets in Canada and the United States. A tectonic framework can aid our understanding of basement structure and the lateral continuity of porosity and permeability—both of which are critical to de-risking carbon sequestration and storage projects. And, if you have no idea what half the words in this post mean, PBS Eons did a great job of explaining some foundational concepts and terminology in the first 4 minutes of this video: https://lnkd.in/g5yx5p-t. The maximum depositional age of 501-508 million year old for the Tapeats sandstone (01:30 and 03:30 in this video) is from a couple of my MSc thesis samples—it’s pretty cool that I was the first person in the world to know this revised age of such a famous sandstone! The rest of this video gets into some hypotheses for the formation of the Great Unconformity, whereas our new Terra Nova paper documents some tectonic influences on the formation of the Great Unconformity in the SW United States.
