🎉Genome BC Employee Spotlight: Senior Advisor/ Ironman Competitor 🌟 Today, we celebrate the incredible achievement of George Poulakidas, Senior Advisor of Policy and Societal Engagement at Genome BC. George recently tackled the grueling Sacramento Ironman, conquering a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.2 km run to top it all off. For George, the Ironman once seemed like a feat reserved for heroes. Inspired by stories like “Team Hoyt”, where a father pushed his quadriplegic son through races, George found his motivation. Despite initial skepticism and discomfort, George committed to a rigorous training schedule. Balancing family life, a PhD pursuit, a full-time job and intense training sessions, George rose before dawn daily for five months. His wife, Frances, and son, Leo along with friends Peggy and Pia, provided unwavering support throughout his journey. During the marathon, George maintained a resilient mindset, crossing the finish line with the desire to do this again. George’s journey exemplifies dedication and resilience, inspiring us all to push beyond perceived limits and achieve greatness. In fact, George has just registered for his next Ironman in Ottawa, set for August 2025. Congratulations, George, on this remarkable accomplishment! Your determination sets an inspiring example for us all. #EmployeeSpotlight #Ironman #Dedication

🌟 Promoting Equity in Precision Medicine With 1.7 million Indigenous peoples in Canada often underrepresented in genomic databases, these communities experience delays in diagnosis and poorer health outcomes compared to non-Indigenous populations. This affects their overall life expectancy and well-being. In 2023, Genome BC developed an Indigenous Peoples Engagement Framework to elevate Indigenous perspectives, knowledge and collaboration in our work and ensure their voices are heard and their rights respected in the research and innovation process. 🐟 Reviving Pacific Salmon with Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science! 🌊 Old meets new in an exciting project that combines traditional Tsleil-Waututh Nation fishing techniques with the latest genomics to help save Pacific salmon. By studying salmon remains from archaeological sites, researchers are exploring how past fishing practices managed salmon populations and seeing what lessons can be applied to modern fisheries management and salmon restoration efforts. Project co-lead, Dr. Dongya Yang from Simon Fraser University, explains: “With new DNA technology, we can now get detailed info from tiny fish bones. This helps us understand fish species and their history better, giving us insights into how salmon populations changed over time.” Curious about how ancient practices and modern science are coming together? Check out our press release for all the details! 📖 https://lnkd.in/gdbUigFQ #SalmonRestoration #Genomics #TraditionalKnowledge
