An innovative training program, held in June, has equipped two Tahltans with career-ready culinary, housekeeping and janitorial skills, while laying a strong foundation for hospitality careers in remote camps. The Hospitality on The Move ESS (H.O.M.E) training program provides training for remote food service workers and related support staff to transform remote workplaces into a home away from home. Held in Terrace over 10 days, eight Indigenous participants received training as prep cooks, servers, and camp attendants, combining class instruction with on-the-job application. In addition to developing technical skills and practicing teamwork, they learned valuable resume and relationship building skills. The intention was to build capacity, provide remote sector pre-employment skills and offer employment opportunities to those well-suited for available positions at ESS sites, and potential opportunities in all Compass Group Canada sectors. Graduation day saw participants presented with two certificates: one from Camosun College for completing the basic culinary 5-day program and another from ESS for completing their H.O.M.E program (culinary, housekeeping and career readiness). This is the first of several training initiatives for Tahltan and Nisga’a members being delivered through the Treaty Creek Limited Partnership (TCLP). Established between the Tahltan and Nisga’a Nations through their respective development corporations, Tahltan Nation Development Corporation (TNDC) and Nisga’a Growth Corporation, TCLP aims to provide new opportunities for Nation members through training, employment, and contracts with KSM. ESS Compass Group is TCLP’s partner providing camp services and catering on the KSM Project. Last month, 32 Compass Group Canada chefs gathered for Indigenous Culinary Trainings at the British Columbia Institute of Technology and Mount Royal University led by the incomparable Chef Steph Baryluk. Chef Steph brought her wit, expertise, and rich culinary background, teaching our chefs how to master and include Indigenous dishes into their menus. Participants highlighted these key takeaways... 👉 the preservation and lack of food waste, 👉 creating fusion meals with Indigenous ingredients, and 👉 authentically representing the Indigenous community Many thanks to our Chartwells Canada team for hosting and to Chef Steph for sharing her culture with us!

HOME (Hospitality On The Move ESS) offered an exciting 10-day capacity building program for Indigenous community members at Robin's Nest near Terrace, BC, on Tsimshian, Kitsumkalum, and Kitselas First Nation lands. Mixing career readiness with culinary, housekeeping, and janitorial skills, the program is designed to pave the way for lifelong career growth! Inspired by stories of Indigenous success at Compass, it was both empowering and enjoyable!
