❗ CPJ is calling for action on the Canada Disability Benefit (CDB). Initially celebrated as a step toward ending poverty for people with disabilities, the current draft regulations fall far short of this goal. Add your voice before consultations close on September 23! Groups and individuals can use CPJ’s resources to send an open letter or comment directly in the Canada Gazette. Whether you have lived experience or want to advocate for a more just society, your input matters. Visit cpj.ca/cdb/ to add your voice! Let’s make the CDB what it was meant to be. #CanadaDisabilityBenefit #DisabilityRights #CPJ #EndPoverty #cdb #canada #cdnpoli #publicjustice #disabilityrights #publicengagement

Grassy Narrows First Nation has been in a fight for justice and the well-being of its people and land for over half a century. On September 18, CPJ calls on you to support Grassy Narrows youth and community members at the Grassy Narrows River Run in Toronto, where they will demand that Ontario and Canada: 1. Compensate everyone in Grassy Narrows fairly for the mercury crisis. 2. Respect the Grassy Narrows Indigenous Protected Area (end mining and logging plans in Grassy Narrows territory). 3. Support Grassy Narrows in restoring their community and way of life from the damage that mercury has done. To find details about attending the event, including registration for bus travel to Toronto from Montréal, Ottawa, Hamilton, Guelph, Kingston, and Kitchener-Waterloo, visit the link: https://lnkd.in/deF7DtGF CPJ’s history with Grassy Narrows In court and at road blockades, CPJ has had the privilege of advocating for Grassy Narrows over the past decades. Justice for Indigenous peoples in Canada is a crucial CPJ policy area that underpins our work in climate justice, poverty elimination, and refugee and migrant rights. #freegrassy #grassynarrows #IndigenousReconciliation #IndigenousRights #EcoStewardship #IndigenousLandRights #IndigenousCommunities #ReconciliationJourney #landback #mercury #justice #canada #cdnpoli #ontario #protest #toronto #solidarity

📢We’re echoing a call from the Migrant Rights Network: on the weekend of September 14 and 15, take to the streets to say no to racism and yes to immigrant justice! In December 2021, the federal government promised regularization—permanent resident status for undocumented people—but has fallen short on its promise. Without status, migrants remain: ❌underpaid, ❌exploited, ❌and excluded. Fairness and justice for all in Canada requires regularization and status for all. 🌎Will you be attending an action in your community on September 14th or 15th? ✍ “Part of the problem is that our policies are typically designed (and voted for) by people with vastly different experiences from those whom they impact the most.” In her article from earlier this summer, CPJ Socio-Economic Policy Analyst Natalie Appleyard emphasizes the need for intentional cross-sector connections in an increasingly polarized world. She advocates for mutual care and understanding, highlighting the importance of inclusive policy-making that centres on the most marginalized communities. ❓ Where do your beliefs stand in relation to collective rights and well-being? John Olthuis, a prominent lawyer and recent Member of the Order of Canada, has dedicated over 30 years to advocating for Indigenous rights in Canada. His significant contributions include high-profile legal cases and mentorship for Indigenous lawyers. Motivated by his Christian values, he co-founded Citizens for Public Justice with Gerald Vandezande and Jim Visser and played a crucial role in establishing Indigenous rights in Canada’s constitution. Victoria Brayshaw-Driessen highlighted his background, motivations, and the impact of his work on Canadian law and Indigenous communities in a recent piece in Christian Courier. Citizens for Public Justice - CPJ reposted this
The Our Voices Matter Council recently partnered with Citizens for Public Justice - CPJ. CPJ is a humanitarian organization that advocates on poverty, climate justice, and refugee rights. Our Voices Matter and CPJ worked together with other groups across Canada to write joint recommendations on the Canada Disability Benefit. And that's not the first time Our Voices Matter has partnered with CPJ! They wrote this article together a few years ago: https://lnkd.in/gZKr2MnM Today is World Humanitarian Day! Humanitarian organizations advocate for and support people's basic human rights, like having food to eat and a place to live. Let's be like Our Voices Matter and join in humanitarian work to create communities where everybody belongs! #WorldHumanitarianDay

As a proud member of the Canadian Health Coalition’s (CHC) board, CPJ knows that healthcare is deeply connected to poverty, refugee and migrant rights, and climate change. While there are many concerns about the current state of our health care system, we know there are evidence-based, rights-based solutions! A recent CHC poll conducted by Environics Research found that: ❗ Seven in ten Canadians (74%) say that health care in their province is currently in crisis. ❗ Over one third of Canadians (40%) report that they or family members have avoided going to emergency at a hospital due to stories and concerns about very long waits to be seen by anyone. ❗ The vast majority (80%) of Canadians want their premier to work with the federal government to implement pharmacare.
