The strength and integrity of our community are essential to CIM, and we want to understand when we, as individuals or as an organization, are not living up to these values. Allowing our members and volunteers to submit anonymous reports helps us improve how we operate. In our ongoing efforts to ensure that CIM remains a safe and sustainable community for all, we have, after a thorough review, updated our Whistleblower Policy. These changes are designed to empower our members, volunteers, branches, societies, committees, suppliers and employees to report any instances of misconduct, wrongdoing or unethical behaviour without fear of retaliation and to reinforce the overall integrity of our organization. Professor Roussos Dimitrakopoulos, Department of Mining and Materials Engineering, McGill University, presented the keynote "Mine Planning, Supporting Mineral Reserves" at MRMR focused on the challenge mining operations face significant uncertainty, particularly in terms of ore grade variability and market demand. Stochastic mine planning is an approach that incorporates uncertainty into the mine planning process involving both geostatistical simulation and stochastic optimization. Roussos highlighted the key benefits: ➡️ Enhanced Decision-Making ➡️ Improved Mine Plans ➡️ Effective Risk Management ➡️ Optimized Cutoff Grades ➡️ Integrated Waste Management and Reclamation ➡️ Flexible Capital Investment The approach starts with the geostatistical simulation of orebody models, followed by stochastic optimization of the related strategic plan of a mining complex. The approach manages technical risk from materials mined and at the same time capitalizing from the synergies between all parts of a mining complex, leading (as shown in comparisons with the conventional deterministic approaches to better mine plans that produce more metal and generate higher NPV. 🌟 Exciting News! 🌟 The past year have been incredibly rewarding for our CIM-MetSoC MUN Student Chapter at Memorial University, Newfoundland and Labrador. We are thrilled to announce that we have been awarded the prestigious Outstanding Student Chapter Award for 2024! 🏆 This recognition highlights the dedication and hard work of our entire team, who have collaborated with several organizations such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) - MUN Student Chapter, the Alexander Murray Geological Club, and the Graduate Students' Union - Memorial University to deliver a variety of impactful events. These include: 🔸 Distinguished lecture with industry leaders 🔸 An industry field trip with The Newfoundland and Labrador Prospectors Association (NLPA) 🔸 Volunteering at the Mineral Resources Review (MRR) 2023 🔸 Game nights and information sessions for students 🔸 Attendance at the Conference of Metallurgists (COM) 2024 in Halifax, where we received this prestigious award We are incredibly proud of our student volunteer team who participated in MRR 2023, and the positive feedback we received for our contributions. This achievement would not have been possible without the leadership of our president, Leila Abbasian, and the dedicated efforts of our executive members: Mordecai Chimedza, Maryam Ettelaei, Ehsan Gerashi. Seeta Singal, and Adrienne MacGowan. A special thank you to our Faculty Advisor, Dr. Steve Butt, and all our current and past members for their tremendous support. We are also grateful to the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science for their continued support. Indeed, there is much to be excited about, and we look forward to continuing our mission of connecting students with industry opportunities and fostering professional growth in the mining, metallurgy, and materials sectors. Thank you to everyone who has supported us in making this year such a success! #CIMMetSoc #OutstandingStudentChapter #MiningIndustry #MaterialsScience #Leadership #Networking
